The role is responsible for supporting the managing and developing a portfolio of commercial relationships with oil majors, oil importers. In addition, it also supports planning, delivering, and supervising the Supply activities in line with the trading and negotiation priorities. The roles supports the development and execution mid-term (6 - 12 months) supply strategies to maximize the profitability of our assets and ensure customer demands are met The role supports the Light and specialties and the Distillate and Bitumen Supply coordinators.

Key Accountabilities

  • Accountable for the negotiation and execution of all term and spot /product supply sales & purchases within the geographical boundaries of bpSA C&P (includes all grades). The role will:
    • Ensure finished product is sold at optimum netback value
    • Ensure the bpSA C&P is supplied with product to meet the planned market demand at the lowest cost to serve
  • Define processes and guidelines for resolving most economic supply options for product sales & purchases

  • Obtain supply availability through term exchange/buy sell/throughput for channels, including the determination and execution of pricing for all contracts

  • Accountable for the end-to-end management of all spot supply contracts

  • Responsible for supply management assurance (i.e., data integrity, accurate competitive data, pricing information, etc.)

  • Use the S&OP process by which to meet/exceed the 6 months performance vs. the annual plan (reliability, safety stock, cost to serve targets)

  • Define guidelines for the conduct and outputs required of audits, guidelines for the distribution and utilization of supply performance reporting data, and guidelines for the boundaries and interactions between supply management and mid-term planning activities

  • Input criteria to support the supply planning & optimisation assurance activities

  • Be aware of the operational execution that ensures minimal value leakage iro all supply contracts

  • Fully accountable for all deal compliance issues iro HSSE and bp global Trading Compliance processes

  • Ensure alignment between strategy, 4-24 months rolling plan and entitlements in order to support rigorous and accurate deal decision making for 3MRP operational period

  • Holds the support for primary accountability for the collaborate with the following key partners:
    • Geographically defined local Oil companies
    • Global Oil Trading on behalf of the bpSA C&P
    • Local Traders
    • Masana
    • Marine
  • Negotiate best commercial outcomes across fuels and explore business growth opportunities to provide flexibility and supply security for medium and long term

  • Improving the values for the South Africa Marketing business, through monetizing assets and placing excess

  • Work closely with the bp Global Oil trading benches to complete term physical trades, as well as providing two-way market information flow

Key requirements

  • Understanding complex economic drivers, refinery production where applicable, and logistical/shipping constraints. There is a large body of knowledge that is required to make decisions and optimise solutions

  • Building credible and effective relationships within SA C&P and external counterparts. These relationships are vital to the delivery of commercial goals, and at times may be tested

  • A balance between being firm and achieving successful outcomes for bp is required

  • Dealing with continual change and ambiguity. The product supply team is a dynamic environment which experiences a lot of change and at times can involve high pressure situations with significant commercial stakes.

  • Demonstrated ability to challenge traditional thinking and take different perspectives on situations

  • Active management of conflict

  • A degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Economics & Chemical Engineering degrees and any other relevant qualification

  • Demonstrated experience in supply chain, negotiation, and external relationship management

  • Excellent teammate, able to build effective working relationships across a broad spectrum of teams. Promotes open and effective communication

  • Demonstrated excellence in commercial competence and numeracy

  • Effective networking within the organisation, across the FVC and externally. Strong partner engagement and relationship management.

  • Track record of effective decision making in complex commercial decisions, even when only partial information is available

  • Strong negotiation skills, with the ability to maximise BP value from negotiations with both internal and external parties

  • Demonstrated leadership skills in an informal context

  • Innovative, with the ability to be creative and generate new ideas

  • Desired:
    • Exposure to T&S, Refining, Pricing, Operations

  • Understanding trading industry and external markets

  • Demonstrable understanding of the South Africa supply landscape and competitive edges

  • Track record for identifying, pursuing, and delivering business opportunities

  • Relationship Management - Strong interpersonal, communication, networking, and negotiation skills. Excellent internal and external networking skills

  • Business Awareness – Understands the entire South African supply chain, and regional mass balance

  • Powerful negotiation skills, able to articulate complex concepts to a wide range of people

  • Detailed understanding of how to value product based on alternatives both locally and internationally

  • Capable and experienced in import economics, optionality value and physical operations
