Job Purpose

We are seeking a skilled and hands-on Mechanical Fitter responsible for the assembly, installation, maintenance, repair, and servicing of mechanical equipment and production machinery. The successful candidate will ensure optimal equipment performance, minimize downtime, and maintain high operational and safety standards within a manufacturing and industrial environment.

The role requires strong technical ability, mechanical fault-finding expertise, and experience working with heavy-duty industrial equipment.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Maintenance & Repairs

  • Perform routine preventative and scheduled maintenance on mechanical equipment and machinery.
  • Diagnose mechanical faults and carry out repairs to minimize production downtime.
  • Dismantle, inspect, repair, replace, and reassemble mechanical components.
  • Conduct breakdown maintenance and emergency repairs when required.

Installation & Assembly

  • Install, assemble, and commission new machinery and mechanical systems.
  • Align and fit mechanical components, bearings, shafts, motors, pumps, and gearboxes.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical schematics, and assembly instructions.
  • Ensure machinery installation meets required operational specifications.

Equipment Performance & Troubleshooting

  • Conduct inspections to identify wear, damage, or mechanical defects.
  • Troubleshoot hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical system failures.
  • Monitor equipment efficiency and recommend improvements to reduce downtime.
  • Perform testing and calibration after maintenance or repairs.

Workshop & Fabrication Support

  • Use hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and precision measuring instruments safely and effectively.
  • Carry out minor fabrication work where required.
  • Maintain workshop equipment in safe working condition.
  • Ensure all tools and equipment are properly stored and maintained.

Safety & Compliance

  • Comply with company safety procedures and occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures during maintenance activities.
  • Wear and maintain required PPE at all times.
  • Report unsafe conditions and equipment defects immediately.

Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 / Matric Certificate.
  • Trade Test Certificate – Fitter or Mechanical Fitter.
  • Mechanical Engineering qualification (N3 or equivalent advantageous).

Experience

  • Minimum 3 – 5 years’ experience as a Mechanical Fitter in manufacturing, engineering, mining, or industrial environments.
  • Experience working with heavy mechanical equipment and production machinery.
  • Experience with hydraulic and pneumatic systems preferred.
  • Experience performing preventative and breakdown maintenance.
