This programme offers an exceptional opportunity for law graduates to gain practical experience within a modern in-house legal environment. Interns will collaborate with experienced legal professionals and will receive structured mentorship and exposure to legal advisory services, contract governance, legal research, regulatory compliance, and higher education law.

Job Purpose

To participate in the RI Legal Internship Programme by supporting the Legal Function in the delivery of legal advisory, contract governance, legal research, regulatory compliance, and institutional legal services, while receiving structured professional development and practical exposure to higher education law, governance, and legal operations.

Duties & Responsibilities

Contract Governance & Legal Drafting

  • Assist in drafting and reviewing contracts and legal agreements.
  • Assist with drafting legal opinions and legal correspondence.
  • Support the maintenance of contract templates.
  • Assist with contract risk identification.
  • Proofreading and editing of legal documents.
  • Prepare case summaries, legal memoranda and legal reports.

Legal Research & Analysis

  • Conduct research on legislation, case law, regulations and legal commentary.
  • Summarise judgments, articles, and legislation.
  • Prepare legal memoranda, research notes and briefing papers.
  • Assist legal professionals with case preparation by gathering relevant legal materials.
  • Analyse legal issues and provide brief written opinions or memos.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments affecting higher education.

Legal Operations & Matter Management

  • Maintain legal matter files.
  • Assist in managing legal registers.
  • Prepare meeting documentation.
  • Support legal workflow management.
  • Manage basic administrative duties such as scheduling appointments, filing documents, managing correspondence.

Regulatory & Governance Support

  • Review policies and procedures for compliance with applicable laws.
  • Monitor legislative developments.
  • Support governance and legal compliance initiatives.
  • Support compliance checks and legal risk assessments.

AI-Assisted Legal Work

  • Use approved AI-assisted legal research, drafting and document review tools, under supervision, to enhance legal research, document preparation, knowledge management and operational efficiency.

Professional Development

  • Participate in mentorship sessions.
  • Attend legal training workshops.
  • Exposure to contract governance.
  • Observe legal advisory processes.
  • Develop professional legal skills under supervision.
  • Exposure to litigation support and dispute management processes where applicable.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree (NQF 7)

Experience

  • Experience in a legal, governance, compliance or higher education environment will be advantageous but is not essential. Recent graduates with a demonstrated interest in legal practice are also encouraged to apply.
