PURPOSE OF ROLE

To deliver high-quality mechanical engineering designs and technical outputs for EPC and industrial projects, ensuring compliance with client requirements, applicable codes and standards, and internal engineering procedures. The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the development, review and coordination of mechanical and piping system designs, supporting tendering, procurement, project execution and commissioning within multidisciplinary engineering environments.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Mechanical Design & Engineering Development

  • Develop and review mechanical, piping, pump and rotating equipment designs in line with project specifications and standards.
  • Produce calculations, datasheets, drawings and technical documentation for equipment and systems.
  • Perform stress analysis, hydraulic calculations and design verifications.
  • Update and maintain design models and drawings using approved engineering software.
  • Resolve technical design queries and implement corrective design improvements.

Technical Compliance & Quality Assurance

  • Ensure all engineering outputs comply with applicable codes, standards and client specifications.
  • Conduct internal design reviews and checks on drawings, calculations and documentation.
  • Maintain adherence to internal engineering processes and quality systems.
  • Identify technical risks and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Support audits and quality inspections by providing accurate technical records.

Project Support, Planning & Coordination

  • Participate in project planning sessions and provide engineering input to schedules.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure design integration and alignment.
  • Track and report progress on allocated engineering deliverables.
  • Manage technical scope and change control within assigned projects.
  • Attend project meetings and provide technical feedback and solutions.

Tendering, Procurement & Supplier Support

  • Provide technical input into tenders, cost estimates and Bills of Quantities (BOQs).
  • Compile and review technical specifications for equipment and materials.
  • Evaluate supplier quotations and provide technical adjudications.
  • Clarify technical queries with vendors and subcontractors.
  • Support procurement and expediting teams with technical information.

Stakeholder & Client Engagement

  • Liaise with clients to clarify technical requirements and provide design feedback.
  • Maintain effective communication with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in design review meetings with clients and consultants.
  • Provide technical support during site visits, installation and commissioning phases.
  • Build and maintain professional working relationships with all project stakeholders.

QUALIFICATION

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification
  • ECSA registration or candidate status (beneficial)

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 5 years post-qualification industrial plant design experience
  • Experience in power, mining, oil & gas or heavy industrial sectors preferred.
  • Site-related experience (beneficial)
  • Experience in Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) projects

COMPETENCIES

Knowledge

  • Mechanical and piping system design principles.
  • Rotating equipment and pumping system design principles.
  • HVAC design competency (advantageous).
  • Power generation, mining, oil & gas or industrial plant environments.
  • Applicable engineering codes, standards and regulations.
  • Procurement processes and technical specification development.
  • Multidisciplinary engineering interfaces and project lifecycle management.

  • Strong technical design and analytical capability.
  • Proficiency in engineering design software (CAD, stress and hydraulic analysis tools).
