Deputy Principal - Head of Operations

The Operational Deputy Principal is responsible for the daily running of the school. The role ensures that students, staff, facilities, timetables, events and operational systems function efficiently and consistently so that teaching and learning can take place without disruption.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Student Discipline
- Manage all student discipline referrals from staff.
- Conduct student discipline investigations and collect statements where required.
- Meet with students and parents regarding behavioural concerns.
- Issue sanctions in accordance with the school's disciplinary procedures.
- Maintain accurate discipline records and student behaviour databases.
- Track recurring behavioural concerns and implement intervention plans.
- Ensure detention, community service and other disciplinary measures are supervised and completed.
- Provide visible supervision before school, during breaks, after school and at assemblies.
- Attend disciplinary hearings and prepare all required documentation.
Daily School Operations
- Manage the daily operation of the school timetable.
- Arrange substitutions and relief cover for absent staff.
- Publish daily staff notices and operational updates.
- Allocate venues for lessons, examinations, meetings and activities.
- Resolve timetable clashes, venue conflicts and staffing shortages.
- Maintain the annual school operational calendar.
- Ensure school routines, transitions and daily procedures operate efficiently.
Staff Duty Management
- Compile and maintain duty rosters.
- Allocate break duties, gate duties, assembly duties and supervision duties.
- Monitor staff attendance and punctuality.
- Ensure supervision requirements are adequately staffed.
- Manage examination invigilation schedules.
- Arrange supervision for events, tours and extracurricular activities.
Facilities and Campus Management
- Conduct regular campus inspections.
- Log, prioritise and track maintenance requirements.
- Monitor classroom readiness, furniture, equipment and venue standards.
- Liaise with maintenance, cleaning and security contractors.
- Ensure health and safety requirements are implemented.
- Coordinate emergency drills and evacuation procedures.
- Follow up on all campus safety concerns until resolved.
Sport and Cultural Activities
- Approve and maintain sport and cultural schedules.
- Allocate venues, staffing and supervision for activities.
- Coordinate transport requirements for fixtures and events.
- Ensure facilities are prepared before activities commence.
- Monitor attendance and supervision at practices and fixtures.
- Manage operational communication relating to sport and culture.
Assemblies, Functions and Events
- Produce operational plans for assemblies and school events.
- Arrange venue setup, seating, sound, staging and equipment requirements.
- Coordinate staff responsibilities for events.
- Manage student movement and supervision during events.
- Ensure all event logistics are completed before commencement.
- Conduct post-event reviews and address operational issues.
Parent and Stakeholder Communication
- Respond to operational, discipline and facility-related parent enquiries.
- Meet with parents regarding student behaviour and operational matters.
- Communicate operational changes affecting students and staff.
- Liaise with service providers and contractors.
Leadership Team Responsibilities
- Attend School Management Team meetings.
- Provide weekly operational reports to the Principal.
- Monitor completion of operational action items.
- Assist with strategic projects and school improvement initiatives as directed by the Principal.

- Discipline matters are addressed timeously and accurately.
- Daily staffing and supervision requirements are met.
- Timetable disruptions are minimised.
- School events run smoothly and safely.
- Facilities are maintained to a high standard.
- Health and safety requirements are consistently met.
- Staff, students and parents experience a well-organised and efficiently run school.
Requirements
- A relevant undergraduate degree in Education or a related field.
- A recognised professional teaching qualification and current SACE registration.
- Proven leadership experience in a school environment, preferably in a deputy principal, phase head, grade head, operations or comparable senior management role.
- Demonstrable experience in student discipline, staff management and day-to-day school operations.
- Experience in timetabling, staff scheduling, substitutions, duty allocation and operational planning.
- Sound understanding of facilities management, campus readiness, health and safety, and event coordination.
- Experience coordinating or supporting sport, culture and extramural programmes.
- Strong organisational, communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- A calm, hands-on leadership style and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Confidence in using school administration systems, timetabling tools and digital communication platforms.
