This Afrikaans Teaching Position is a leadership role focused on managing and enhancing the Afrikaans First Additional Language curriculum within the High School. The successful candidate will oversee effective teaching, learning and assessment practices to ensure strong educational outcomes for students. Experience in an IEB school environment is essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the Afrikaans FAL curriculum and instructional programmes, aligned to CAPS, IEB requirements and relevant educational standards.
  • Ensure that teaching, assessment and moderation practices meet IEB expectations and prepare students effectively for the IEB NSC examinations.
  • Provide guidance, mentoring and support to Afrikaans FAL educators in delivering high-quality instruction and assessments.
  • Lead and facilitate professional development for Afrikaans FAL teachers to strengthen teaching practice, assessment design and subject knowledge.
  • Monitor student performance and assessment data, identify areas for improvement and implement targeted academic interventions.
  • Engage constructively with parents and the broader school community to promote Afrikaans language development, communication skills and cultural appreciation.
  • Remain informed of current educational trends, IEB developments, research and best practice in Afrikaans FAL education.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive and accountable departmental culture among staff and students.

Requirements

  • A relevant undergraduate degree in Education, Afrikaans or a related field.
  • SACE registration.
  • Essential: Proven teaching and assessment experience within an IEB school, preferably in the FET phase.
  • Demonstrable experience in curriculum development, assessment and instructional leadership within the FET phase.
  • Sound knowledge of CAPS, IEB assessment requirements, moderation processes and preparation for the IEB NSC examinations.
  • A proven track record of improving student learning outcomes through effective and innovative teaching strategies.
  • Strong communication, leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyse assessment data and use it to inform teaching practice, intervention and curriculum decisions.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • A relevant postgraduate qualification in Education, Afrikaans or a related field.
  • Previous experience as a Head of Department, Subject Head or in a comparable leadership role.
  • Experience in mentoring and coaching teachers in Afrikaans FAL pedagogy and assessment practice.
  • Familiarity with digital tools and resources that enhance Afrikaans teaching and learning.
  • Active participation in professional learning communities or networks focused on language education.
