Biochemistry, Microbiology and Bioinformatics
The Department of the Biochemistry, Microbiology and Bioinformatics invite suitably qualified candidates to join their team.
Main Objectives
Provide effective and efficient laboratory, training, administration and reporting for the BioBRU research group and for the Chair in accordance with the University’s policies and procedures. Procure, place orders, and monitor the receipt of laboratory goods; oversee the PMP programme for laboratory equipment; and ensure researchers adhere to good laboratory practices and biosafety guidelines. Provide efficient and effective support to a large research group, including multiple researchers, postdocs and postgraduate students. Support training in core laboratory techniques and contribute to data collection to support outputs.
The Requirements
A master’s degree in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology or a related subject, plus approximately one year’s experience, is preferred; an Honours degree for an exceptional candidate in one of these subjects will be acceptable if accompanied by approximately 2 years’ relevant experience. For candidates at either level, they should demonstrate the following experience: -
- Previous experience in independent laboratory-based research as a postgraduate researcher in a molecular, microbiology or cell biology laboratory.
- Previous experience working in or managing a laboratory environment, including supporting the laboratory systems, leadership of a research laboratory environment and maintaining lab equipment.
- Experience in laboratory-based molecular research, including training postgraduate students and contributing to a research programme.
- Working knowledge of financial management and accounting principles.
- Previous experience working within a computerised environment and having worked with Excel at an advanced level.
- Previous experience in working with word-processing, e-mail and the internet.
- Previous experience in setting up and maintaining filing and administrative systems.

Remuneration per annum (Grade 12)
Basic Pensionable Salary per annum: R490,320
Cost to Company per annum (Approximately): R551,886
