The Group ESG Manager is responsible for providing specialist and advisory services at a group level to the various project sites to ensure compliance with applicable environmental and ESG related legislation, regulations, and standards to achieve best practices.

Responsibilities include input into environmental plans and management; provision of practical advice and guidance related to continuous environmental improvement, compliance auditing, reporting and monitoring.

The role incumbent will integrate their work with the project sites to ensure holistic achievement of goals as well as to support the implementation / maintenance of appropriate systems to optimise performance within the Environmental management function.

The Group ESG Manager will be required to provide input into the establishment, implementation and management of ESG governance practices in alignment with industry best practices. The role will be responsible to facilitate and track ESG KPI achievement across the group.

Key responsibilities would include

  • Develop and implement the group ESG strategy in line with business objectives and sustainability goals.
  • Provide specialist guidance to project sites on environmental and ESG compliance requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable environmental legislation, regulations, permits, and standards.
  • Support the development, implementation, and review of environmental management plans and ESG frameworks.
  • Monitor ESG performance across sites and track progress against agreed KPIs and targets.
  • Lead or support environmental compliance audits, inspections, and corrective action tracking.
  • Provide input into environmental reporting, sustainability reporting, and stakeholder reporting.
  • Advise on continuous environmental improvement initiatives, including waste, water, energy, emissions, and biodiversity management.
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of ESG governance systems and controls.
  • Work with site teams to ensure alignment between operational activities and ESG requirements.
  • Guide incident reporting, investigations, and follow-up actions related to environmental and ESG matters.
  • Engage with internal stakeholders, regulators, and external auditors where required.
  • Promote awareness, training, and accountability for ESG compliance and performance across the group.
  • Identify ESG risks and opportunities and recommend practical mitigation measures.
  • Short-term and long-term environmental responsibility planning where applicable.

Minimum Requirements

  • Degree in Environmental Management or a related field equivalent at NQF level 7
  • Post graduate degree in Environmental, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) or Sustainability Management, or equivalent at NQF level 8, will be advantageous

Experience

  • At least eight years’ post qualification experience in the environmental and/ or ESG field.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the mining industry.
  • Experience in Water, Land, Air, Environmental Management systems and Stakeholder Management will be an inherent requirement of the role.
  • Experience in dealing with South African government authorities in relation to relevant Legislation
  • Experience in developing and implementing corporate ESG and Sustainability strategies and reporting frameworks.
