Drive Green Hydrogen Coordination in the Eastern Cape
GIZ is seeking a Technical Advisor: Private Sector & Finance to be seconded to the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) as the Eastern Cape Green Hydrogen Coordinator.
This role forms part of the H2.SA II / Battery Value Chains - Promoting a Green Hydrogen Economy in South Africa programme, implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Union.
The position will support provincial coordination, stakeholder engagement and project-enabling activities linked to the development of the green hydrogen and Power-to-X sector in the Eastern Cape, including initiatives connected to the Three Capes Green Hydrogen Corridor.
This role is located within Workstream 2, which focuses on supporting project developers to reach bankability. The position will be based in East London at the offices of DEDEAT and is limited until 31 July 2028, with a possible one-year extension.
What You Need to Succeed
A relevant tertiary qualification, specifically a first degree in:
- Economics
- Business Administration
- Environmental Sciences
- Engineering
At least 5 years of relevant work experience in one or more of the following fields:
- Environmental consulting
- Business consulting
- Renewable energy
- Green hydrogen project development
- (Infrastructure) project finance
- An understanding of the South African green hydrogen and renewable energy sector, including energy policy and regulatory frameworks
- Experience in green hydrogen, PtX and/or the energy transition
- Proven willingness to further develop and enhance technical skills and competencies
- Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- The ability to effectively prioritise tasks
- The ability to deliver consistently high-quality results in close coordination with partners
- Strong project management skills
- Strong professional communication skills
- A consultant-like working style
- Excellent written and spoken English
What You Will Be Doing
The Eastern Cape Green Hydrogen Coordinator will serve as a key coordination focal point, helping to strengthen collaboration across Eastern Cape institutions involved in the PtX sector. The role will support project-enabling activities and contribute to removing implementation bottlenecks.
ECGH2 Coordination and Operational Management
- Supporting the day-to-day coordination and functioning of the provincial Green Hydrogen Coordination office
- Assisting with the collection, validation and organisation of data required for programme analysis and decision-making
- Tracking and reporting on project timelines, milestones, risks and dependencies across multiple workstreams
- Establishing and maintaining:
- Project tracking systems
- Workflows
- Knowledge repositories
- Document management processes
- Ensuring effective communication, scheduling and coordination of project activities and deliverables
- Supporting the organisation of coordination meetings and governance processes
- Supporting the preparation of:
- Concept notes
- Technical briefs
- Strategic briefs
- Business case documentation
Stakeholder Coordination and Liaison
- Facilitating provincial coordination with the 3-Capes Project Management Unit, which seeks to coordinate PtX matters impacting the three Cape provinces
- Supporting coordination with key stakeholders at provincial and national level
- Identifying pain points of PtX projects
- Assisting project developers in developing and implementing effective mitigation strategies
- Coordinating stakeholder meetings, including:
- Agenda preparation
- Minute-taking
- Tracking of action items
- General meeting support
- Supporting engagement processes related to initiatives such as the Three Capes Green Hydrogen Corridor
Alignment with H2.SA II / BVC and Wider GIZ Activities
- Support the overall implementation of the H2.SA II / BVC programme activities
- Participate in and contribute to coordination meetings at:
- GIZ cluster level
- Programme level
- Component level
- Workstream 2 level
- Proactively share information and align on DEDEAT and ECGH2 priorities and upcoming activities
- Support internal alignment to ensure that GIZ colleagues can provide support where needed
Additional Information
- The position is structured as a secondment and will be based at the offices of DEDEAT in East London.
- The position is limited until 31 July 2028, in line with the partner’s request. There may be an option to extend the position by another year.
