Develops and drives the financial strategy for the segment aligned to the business strategy and oversees operational delivery of the finance portfolio and provision of strategic finance support to the business. The incumbent develops tools and systems to provide critical financial and operational information to the MD – Corporate and makes actionable recommendations on both strategy and operations. The role ensures that the segment is aligned to Group requirements, policies and frameworks
The incumbent is accountable for achieving results through internal and external stakeholders over periods of up to 5 years.
- Part of the CFO forum run by the OML Group CFO.
- Participates in the Old Mutual Corporate Executive Committee, and as such contributes to the wider strategy and delivery of the segment.
- Chairs the segment’s RICA (Risk Compliance and Audit) committee
Develops and drives Segment Financial Strategy
- Accountable for setting policy and financial strategy for capital management and for compliance with accounting standards across the business.
- Aligns financial and governance strategy to needs in the external market (inclusive of legislative changes).
- Defines and implements best operating practices for the financial function.
- Provides scenarios and analysis to enable long term strategic planning (+3yrs) and decision making
- Facilitates investment decision making process for operational and strategic projects
- Provides M&A support to the business working with internal and external partners
- Translates and cascades Strategic directives into Operational goals
Oversees Financial management
- Identify, construct and track the right financial metrics aligned to business strategy outcomes
- Efficient Revenue management – accurate recording, reconciliations and reporting. Drive the development of revenue optimisation strategies.
- Efficient and effective expense management through budgeting support, monitoring and analysis and engagement with value chain functions. Drive expense optimisation programmes across the business.
- Balance sheet management – responsible for actuarial liability and accounting provision assumption setting and provisions in line with the Group financial management framework.
- Ensure optimal capital structure and management
- Enable Executives responsible for interface to Group functions to manage cost/benefit for outsourced and group services (e.g. Human Capital, Marketing, etc)
Oversees Internal and external reporting
- Accurate, timely and fit for purpose financial reporting for Group, regulatory reporting requirements as well as internal business management
- Compliance with IFRS, Prudential Authority, FSCA, JSE listing and any other external regulatory requirements
- Ensure Group reporting and external reporting portrays Old Mutual Corporate effectively for investors and shareholders to appropriately understand, model and value the business
Leads Business planning and analysis
- Lead the annual business planning process
- Provide input and analysis to enable planning
- Ensure alignment of the financial plan with the segment strategy
Facilitates Product and customer pricing
- Assist customer segment heads to craft customer level pricing strategies
- Provide input into product pricing and assumption setting
- Enable financially informed decisions at product and customer levels
Facilitates robust Business partnering and stakeholder management
- Provide ongoing thought leadership and expert decision support for all parts of the value chain
- Work with customer segment teams to ensure accurate support on business casing new opportunities and customer propositions
- Manages broad stakeholder relationships

Models Management & Leadership Effectiveness
- Define performance parameters and measurements for area under supervision.
- Manage service delivery through other managers and their teams.
- Hold first line managers accountable for managerial work, including selection, performance management and talent management.
- Ensure effective talent management including succession planning; transformation per the BBBEE targets of the segment and national EAC (economically active population), skills development and training for a sustainable operating model and diverse high performing team
- Encourage a culture of continuous learning and development in the organisation
- Champions and enables change initiatives and facilitates constructive Culture shift
Oversees and ensures Risk Management, Governance and compliance
- Ensure that the business unit is compliant with Group Governance Framework, Segment strategy and operating model and any statutory legislation and regulations
- Interpret Group policies and frameworks for the business and embed into the business
- Oversight on Enterprise Risk and chair the RICA committee
- Ensure appropriate legal business partner support to the business
- Enable appropriate supplier procurement oversight and contracting in line with the business’s BBBEE objectives, SMME focus and agile delivery
- Function as the Segment single point of contact with External Auditors
- Identify and manage key strategic risks; escalates where risks cannot be addressed at this level.
- Understand the unfolding environment that industry & competitors face and defines related risks
Qualifications requirements
- CA(SA) (almost essential)
- MBA and/or CFA advantageous
- FASSA
Experience requirements
- 15–20+ years total finance leadership experience
- 10+ years within insurance, banking, investments, or wealth management at senior leadership level.
