Duties & Responsibilities

The responsibilities of such position are inter alia:

  • Operate a truck and trailer combination as instructed by the Cartage Controller, in full compliance with road traffic legislation, company policies
  • Collect and deliver full and empty containers to and from ports, depots, and client premises, ensuring adherence to booking times, port rules, and customer site safety procedures.
  • Execute all deliveries and collections strictly as per instruction, approved routes, and journey management plans, reporting any deviations immediately.
  • Conduct and accurately complete daily pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip vehicle inspection checklists for the allocated truck and trailer in line with RTMS requirements, and report any defects, damages, or safety concerns to management without delay.
  • Ensure the daily roadworthiness, cleanliness, and basic maintenance of the truck and trailer, including tyres, lights, brakes, load securing equipment, and reefer units where applicable.
  • Verify that all loads comply with legal mass, axle limits, and load securing standards, and refuse to move any vehicle or load that is unsafe, overloaded, or non-compliant.
  • Maintain accurate logbooks, trip sheets, weighbridge slips, delivery documentation, and PODs, ensuring all records are completed honestly and timeously.
  • Comply with driving hours, rest periods, and fatigue management controls as prescribed under RTMS and company policy.
  • Wear prescribed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times and comply with all SHEQ / SQAS safety procedures at ports, depots, and client sites.
  • Immediately report all incidents, accidents, near misses, unsafe acts, vehicle defects, and cargo irregularities in accordance with company procedures.
  • Participate in training, toolbox talks, audits, inspections, and safety initiatives, including Behaviour-Based Safety (BBS) programmes.
  • Perform any reasonable and lawful task assigned by the Cartage Controller or Management, provided such tasks comply with safety, legal, RTMS, and SQAS requirements.

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    • Heavy duty truck driver’s license code EC with minimum of 5 years’ experience;
    • Must have previous experience in the transporting of containerized cargo;
    • Able to work shifts and including weekends and public holidays;
    • Meet occupational health and safety and medical requirements and is required to work under all weather conditions.
