Purpose of the Job
To provide healthcare services to residents aimed at promoting health, preventing illness and supporting optimal recovery from, or adaptation to, health conditions.
Role and Responsibilities
- Physically examine patients within our geriatric care facilities, within the scope of practice of a Registered Nurse.
- Conduct accurate clinical evaluations of patients’ complaints, including initial history taking and clinical assessment.
- Apply a holistic approach to patient evaluation.
- Determine appropriate care and treatment within the scope of practice and refer patients to a General Practitioner where clinically justified.
- Minimise unnecessary referrals to General Practitioners.
- Provide patients with appropriate information in a manner that is sensitive to their condition and level of understanding.
- Promote health education and provide support that enables residents to live a positive and healthy lifestyle, apply principles of self-care and reduce the risk of disease and injury.
- Apply safe and competent clinical decision-making and provide appropriate nursing care.
- Explain the potential side effects of medication and provide patients with appropriate information and advice regarding prescribed and over-the-counter medication.
- Recognise and work within own scope of practice and competence, and in accordance with the professional standards and code of conduct regulated by SANC.
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of relevant products and formularies and apply this knowledge appropriately.
- Maintain accurate records of all activities and actions.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Nursing Diploma / Degree.
- Registered with SANC as a Registered Nurse.
Experience Requirements
- Five years’ working experience in a similar role.
- Experience in the clinical evaluation of patient signs and symptoms.
- Experience in ward management is essential.
- Experience in primary healthcare and managed care would be advantageous.
- Knowledge and experience in gerontology would be advantageous.
