Safety Officer

We are seeking experienced and highly motivated Safety Officers to join our shutdown team within the Petrochemical and Mining industry on a temporary basis. The successful candidates will be responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe working environment by ensuring compliance with SHERQ standards, client requirements, and all applicable health and safety legislation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Compile and maintain project-specific SHERQ documentation and site files
  • Conduct inspections of plant, equipment, and work areas
  • Perform Planned Task Observations (PTOs) on high-risk activities
  • Conduct preliminary incident investigations
  • Identify unsafe acts and conditions through workplace inspections
  • Facilitate risk assessments and hazard identification processes
  • Lead daily Toolbox Talks
  • Monitor compliance with SHERQ standards, client specifications, and legislative requirements
  • Promote and maintain a strong safety culture on site

Minimum Requirements

  • SACPCMP registration as a CHSO (Compulsory)
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in the Petrochemical and/or Mining industry
  • Sound knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act) and Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA)
  • South African citizen with a valid South African ID
  • Clear criminal record
  • Medically fit for site work

  • Basic SHE Principles or SHE Representative Training
  • HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment)
  • Incident Investigation
  • OHS Act and Legal Liability
  • Level 1 First Aid
  • SAMTRAC (including Mine Health and Safety Act)
  • ASHEPP
  • Introduction to SAMTRAC
  • Basic Rigging
  • Report Writing and Effective Communication
  • Internal Auditing

  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Sound report writing and documentation abilities
  • Ability to work under pressure in shutdown environments
  • Good planning, problem-solving, and organisational skills
  • Commitment to maintaining high safety standards
