The UCT Lung Institute is looking for a Research Nurse to support clinical research activities through participant care, clinical procedures, study coordination, and accurate research documentation.

This role is offered under the University of Cape Town Lung Institute’s own employment terms and conditions, which are separate from UCT conditions of service.

POSITION INFO

⭐ What you bring: Nursing Diploma or Degree and current registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse 2-5 years' nursing experience post-registration Fluency in English and Afrikaans and/or isiXhosa Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills Strong organisational and time management skills Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Internet applications) Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team ➕ Advantageous Interest in infectious disease research Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) with current GCP certification Previous experience working with TB patients, particularly drug-resistant TB patients Valid driver's licence and own reliable transport Experience with data management system The successful candidate will be part of a dedicated research team contributing to innovative clinical studies that improve understanding, prevention, and treatment of infectious diseases while making a meaningful difference in patient care. 🺠What you'll own: Study Management / Coordination Support clinical research studies by assisting with participant recruitment, enrolment, informed consent, and randomisation processes Coordinate study activities and ensure adherence to approved study protocols and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) requirements Support orientation and induction of new research personnel when required Maintain accurate participant documentation, including consent forms, case report forms, and study data collection tools Oversee participant data and specimen collection, ensuring compliance with study requirements Coordinate laboratory sample transport, results management, and accurate filing of study documentation Maintain high research nursing standards and patient care throughout the study process Liaise with project teams, sponsors, and relevant stakeholders regarding study activities Assist with investigational product management, returns/destruction processes, and clinical stock availability Clinical Care: Screen participants according to study inclusion and exclusion criteria Support participant recruitment strategies while maintaining confidentiality and ethical research practices Schedule participants for clinical assessments and follow-up visits Explain study procedures to participants and obtain informed consent where required Complete laboratory specimen transfer and transport documentation Administer medications or treatments according to approved study protocols and under appropriate supervision Monitor participant vital signs including blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature Provide clinical support to ensure participant safety and wellbeing throughout the study Data & Administrative Support: Ensure accuracy and completeness of collected research data Maintain organised participant files and study documentation Assist with research administration, archiving, and other study-related duties as required Manage patient reimbursements and study-related petty cash processes where applicable Attend study meetings, provide feedback, and support ongoing trial activities Perform additional research-related duties as assigned Your contribution will help advance healthcare through evidence-based research, ensuring participants receive quality care while supporting studies that have the potential to shape future treatments and interventions. 📍 Role Information: Fixed Term Contract (12 Months) Monday to Friday | 40 hours per week Based at between UCTLI in Mowbray and Groote Schuur Hospital in Observatory ⏳ Closing Date: 17 July 2026 Thank you for your interest in this opportunity.
