Head of Department: Transport

Our client is seeking an accomplished and strategic Head of Department Transport to lead and grow its Transport division in Pretoria. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineering professional with strong leadership capabilities, business development expertise, and extensive experience in public infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality engineering solutions while driving departmental performance, client satisfaction, and business growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Transport department, ensuring effective resource planning and operational excellence.
  • Drive business development initiatives and support regional marketing activities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and stakeholders.
  • Oversee the preparation and submission of tenders while ensuring compliance with company procedures.
  • Manage the successful delivery of transport infrastructure projects from inception through to completion.
  • Review and approve concept and detailed engineering designs.
  • Coordinate tender documentation, contractor appointments, and project handovers.
  • Monitor construction activities, contract administration, quality, testing, commissioning, and project close-out.
  • Mentor and develop engineering professionals and support continuous professional development.
  • Manage departmental budgets and contribute to strategic business planning.
  • Ensure compliance with quality management systems, health and safety requirements, and company policies.

Minimum Requirements

  • BEng or BTech in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Professional registration with ECSA.
  • Minimum of 15 years' post-qualification experience in public infrastructure projects.
  • At least 10 years' experience following ECSA registration.
  • Strong leadership, people management, and project management experience.
  • Sound understanding of local standards, statutory requirements, and construction contracts.
  • Excellent communication, financial management, and client relationship skills.
  • Valid South African driver's licence and own reliable transport.
  • PMP and/or Pr.CPM registration will be advantageous.
