Job Title: Landfill Manager.

Location: Vlakfontein.

Job Overview

Responsible for the overall management and operation of landfill facilities, ensuring safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant waste disposal activities. Oversees daily site operations, personnel, contractors, equipment, and budgets while ensuring compliance with environmental legislation, health and safety regulations, and company standards.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar role; ideally within landfill environment with at least 3 years in a managerial position.
  • In-depth knowledge of the NEM: Waste Act, waste classification and management regulations, and landfill permitting requirements.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Sage.
  • Knowledge of an IMS system (ISO 9001, 14001, 45001).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of double composite liner systems (HDPE + clay, permeability ≤1×10⁻⁹ m/s).
  • Understanding of GNR 635 waste assessment (TC and LC thresholds).
  • Ability to enforce waste acceptance criteria per GNR 636.
  • Experience with leachate collection and leak detection systems.
  • Knowledge of landfill gas management (GNR 924).
  • Familiarity with geotechnical investigations for liner and foundation design.
  • Competence in monitoring and compliance reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Forecasts and monitors expenditures and budgets for resources including manpower, materials and equipment for the operations
  • People management: Build and manage the operations team, optimising talents and growing individuals
  • Manage all day-to-day operations of the Class A landfill site in compliance with environmental legislation and the site's Waste Management License.
  • Oversee waste reception, classification, and disposal to ensure maximum diversion from landfill.
  • Ensure full compliance with the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (NEM:WA) and all other relevant permits and regulations.
  • Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly, and annual compliance and performance reports to the relevant authorities.
  • Implement and maintain Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) management systems on site.
