Our client, a well-established OEM designer and manufacturer of mineral processing equipment (mills, screens, thickeners, feeders and modular plants) supplying the mining industry locally and internationally, is seeking an experienced Workshop Manager to lead their fabrication, machining and assembly operations.
About the role
You'll take full responsibility for day-to-day workshop operations across a large-scale, ISO 9001-certified fabrication facility with overhead crane capacity up to 30 tons. You'll manage production schedules, quality standards, and a skilled team of fabricators, fitters, machinists and welders, ensuring equipment is built, assembled and tested in-house to spec and on time.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and oversee daily workshop production, from fabrication through to final assembly and test-running
- Manage and mentor workshop staff, including fitters, boilermakers, welders and machine operators
- Enforce quality control standards in line with ISO 9001 requirements
- Coordinate with engineering, project management and procurement teams to meet delivery deadlines
- Manage workshop safety, housekeeping and compliance
- Oversee use and maintenance of overhead cranes, machining and fabrication equipment
- Control workshop budgets, resourcing and productivity targets
Requirements
- Trade qualification (Millwright, Fitter, Boilermaker or similar) or relevant mechanical engineering qualification
- Minimum 5-8 years' experience in a heavy engineering, fabrication or steel manufacturing workshop, with at least 3 years in a supervisory/management role
- Experience manufacturing large mechanical equipment (mining, mineral processing, or heavy industrial equipment an advantage)
- Strong understanding of fabrication, machining and mechanical assembly processes
- Proven people management and production planning skills
- Knowledge of ISO 9001 quality systems advantageous
- Own transport and valid driver's licence
