Senior Platform Engineer
SprintHive
SprintHive is a South African fintech specialising in seamless end-to-end customer onboarding solutions that drive conversion rates, prevent fraud, and reduce risk. Our automated solutions enable onboarding for new customers in under two minutes.
We are currently rebuilding our platform engineering function and are seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to take ownership and drive the next phase of platform maturity.
This is a high-autonomy position for a software engineer who has transitioned into infrastructure or a platform engineer with strong development skills. You will be responsible for preparing the platform for its next phase of growth by optimising multi-tenant architecture, automating provisioning, and solving scaling constraints. You will write significant amounts of code (not just YAML) and have real influence over technical direction.
Platform Architecture and Scaling
- Design architectural improvements to support growth trajectories and identify scaling constraints.
- Build automation and self-healing systems to reduce operational overhead.
- Manage high-availability architecture and infrastructure-as-code practices to ensure full platform reproducibility.
Developer Enablement and Tooling
- Build custom automation tooling to streamline operations and reduce manual tasks.
- Develop self-service capabilities for product teams to manage standard changes and observability tooling.
- Improve CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows.
Observability, Cost, and Security
- Manage and improve the monitoring and alerting stack to ensure sustainable on-call rotations.
- Drive cost optimisation across cloud infrastructure while maintaining performance and reliability.
- Embed "Secure By Design" principles into platform design, managing compliance and secure data destruction.
- Lead incident response and contribute to a blameless post-mortem culture.
A relevant degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field is preferred, providing the core understanding of systems and algorithms required for complex platform design.
While not mandatory, holding certifications such as the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) or relevant Cloud Professional certifications (AWS/GCP Solutions Architect) will be highly regarded as a testament to your technical depth.
5+ years of experience in a Platform Engineering, SRE, or DevOps capacity, ideally within a high-growth or regulated fintech environment.
A history of contributing to open-source projects, a strong GitHub profile, or evidence of having built custom platform tools is a significant advantage. We want to see how you think through code.
- Software Development Background: Ability to write production-quality code. We use TypeScript for platform tooling and Go for potential Kubernetes operators.
- Security-First Mindset: Experience with secure infrastructure design and secrets management is non-negotiable given our fintech context.
- Kubernetes Expertise: Deep experience operating, troubleshooting, and extending Kubernetes in production environments.
- Cloud and IaC Proficiency: Experience with GCP or AWS, and proficiency in Terraform or Pulumi.
- SRE Understanding: Practical knowledge of observability, monitoring, incident response, and SLOs.
- We offer a highly competitive market-related package commensurate with the seniority and technical depth of this role. We believe in rewarding expertise and will tailor the offer to reflect your experience, skills, and the value you bring to the SprintHive team.
- Fully remote (South Africa-based, preferally located in Cape Town) with flexible working hours.
- 21 days paid leave.
- Premium hardware setup and AI assistant subscriptions.
- High autonomy in a small team with no bureaucracy and direct strategic influence.
