Objective
Carry out sample preparation of different commodities as instructed by sample preparation team leader and Site supervisor.
Essential
Matric – National Senior Certificate (Higher Certificate).
Skills, Competencies and Experience
- Minimum - 2 years’ relevant Sampling experience.
- Ability to anticipate needs and must be responsive to enquiries.
- Ability to multitask and meet challenging deadlines.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Be able to understand and communicate in the English command.
- Be prepared to work overtime as and when required.
- Be reliable and be able to work for extended periods with minimal supervision.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English is a mandatory requirement.
- Good interpersonal and planning skills and effective in working in a multi-cultural environment.
- Have a working knowledge of the equipment used for the taking of and subsequent preparation of samples.
- He must be receptive to on-going training as the job requirements vary.
- Interact and communicate in a respectful manner taking into consideration the diverse cultures.
- Must be computer literate.
- Must be willing to adhere to company rules, policies, and regulation
- Sound knowledge of sampling and preparation techniques.
Principal Responsibilities and Challenges
- The primary role of the sampler will be, but not limited to the following:
Compliance
- Practice the ALS Health and Safety Foundation Standard
- Practice the ALS company core values
- Comply with the ALS company policies and procedures
- Always abide by local legislative requirements
- Always follow all ALS Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
- Compliance to the ALS Quality Management System
- Responsible for ensuring ALS quality protocols are adhered to and quality targets always met and in accordance with ISO 9001 quality standards
- Prepare and comply with internal as well as external audits for the region
Sampling Responsibilities
- To conduct sampling and inspection activities and prepare samples as per the relevant procedures or a directed by the site supervisor
- These activities may include but are not limited to sampling, packing, labelling, sealing, sizing, and weighing of various commodities.
- To record all necessary information regarding sampling and inspection activities as per relevant procedures or as directed by the immediate supervisor. This may include completion of forms, and / or obtaining photographic evidence of activities.
- To adhere to ALS policies and procedures as well as the requirements of the terminals / ports with regards to the use of personal protective equipment and health and safety requirements.
- To attend the sampling point during the allocated shift and take samples as specified in the relevant sampling procedure or as directed by the Sampling Supervisor.
- To ensure the sample taken is stored in a suitable container to prevent contamination.
- To wear adequate protective clothing as provided.

- Abide by the ALS company policies and procedures.
Quality Assurance
- Always follow all ALS Quality System Procedures.
- Always abide by local legislative requirements.
- Compliance to the ALS Quality Management System
- Prepare and comply with internal as well as external audits.
- Ensure that the quality of analytical data produced meets the ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 17025:2017 standard and are maintained at a level that meets or exceeds company and market acceptable standards.
