Abbotts High School Bordeaux is seeking a dynamic, innovative and future-focused STEAM Teacher to join our founding team and help shape a cutting-edge learning environment from the ground up.

Role Purpose

As a STEAM Teacher (of Grade 8 & 9 initially but likely other grades in coming years), you will design and deliver an integrated, project-based STEAM curriculum that equips students with critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity and digital literacy skills. Through hands-on, technology-rich learning experiences, you will guide students in applying Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics to real-world challenges.

The successful candidate will also serve as a Robotics, Coding and Engineering Specialist, preparing students for a rapidly evolving digital future through computational thinking, engineering design, innovation and technology integration. The role includes the delivery of IEB-aligned Technology and Digital Literacy outcomes through authentic, project-based learning experiences.

Key Responsibilities

Academic Delivery

  • Design and deliver engaging, interdisciplinary STEAM learning experiences aligned to IEB principles and Technology curriculum outcomes.
  • Facilitate project-based and inquiry-driven learning that promotes creativity, innovation, critical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Teach coding, robotics and engineering design through a progression from block-based to text-based programming.
  • Deliver learning aligned to Technology curriculum strands, including Structures, Systems & Control, Processing and the Design Process.
  • Guide students through the Engineering Design Process, including planning, prototyping, testing, evaluation and refinement.
  • Develop interdisciplinary projects that integrate Mathematics, Science and Technology concepts while addressing authentic real-world challenges.
  • Create a stimulating, practical learning environment that encourages experimentation, collaboration and innovation.

Robotics, Coding & Engineering

  • Teach robotics and coding using LEGO Education platforms and other appropriate technologies.
  • Develop student competency in coding environments such as, but not limited to, Scratch, LEGO Spike and Python, while introducing broader robotics and microcontroller ecosystems where appropriate.
  • Teach the application of sensors, motors, automation principles, mechanical systems and basic electronics in robotics and engineering challenges.
  • Inspire and support participation in robotics, coding, engineering and STEM competitions, expos and enrichment programmes.

Innovation Lab & Makerspace Management

  • Manage and maintain innovation lab equipment, including robotics kits, 3D printers, laser cutters and related fabrication technologies.
  • Support students in the use of CAD software, prototyping tools and digital fabrication processes.
  • Ensure the safe, effective and responsible use of all equipment, materials and makerspace facilities.
  • Maintain inventory, servicing schedules and operational readiness of specialist equipment.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and integrate relevant innovations into teaching and learning.

Assessment & Reporting

  • Design and implement authentic assessments aligned with STEAM outcomes, IEB standards and future-focused competencies.
  • Assess student learning through projects, presentations, portfolios, practical investigations and demonstrations of learning.
  • Provide meaningful, timely feedback that supports student growth and achievement.
  • Maintain accurate academic records and use assessment data to inform differentiated instruction and student support.

STEM Leadership & Enrichment

  • Lead and grow STEAM-related clubs, robotics programmes and innovation initiatives.
  • Coordinate participation in relevant competitions, Olympiads, expos and showcases.
  • Promote a culture of innovation, entrepreneurship and future-focused learning.
  • Showcase student projects through exhibitions, open days and community engagement events.

Student Development

  • Foster a culture of curiosity, resilience, creativity and innovation.
  • Manage student behaviour constructively and consistently.
  • Support students' academic, social and emotional development through collaborative learning experiences.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to integrate STEAM principles across the curriculum.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with students, parents and colleagues.
  • Contribute to a high-performance, future-focused school culture.

Administration & Compliance

  • Complete all required administrative duties accurately and timeously.
  • Uphold school policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to Health & Safety standards, particularly within technical learning environments and makerspaces.

Brand Ambassadorship

  • Represent Abbotts High School and Advtech with professionalism and integrity.
  • Contribute to building a strong, innovative and distinctive school identity from inception.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A relevant degree (NQF Level 7) with a PGCE or B.Ed., preferably in Technology, Engineering, Computer Science, STEM Education or a related field.
  • Valid SACE registration and police clearance.
  • 2–5 years' teaching experience in Technology, Robotics, Coding, STEAM or related disciplines, preferably within an independent or high-performing school environment.
  • Experience within an IEB school environment will be advantageous.
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating robotics, coding and project-based learning programmes.
  • Practical experience using technologies such as LEGO Education platforms, CAD software, 3D printers, laser cutters or related fabrication tools.
  • Strong digital literacy and understanding of computational thinking, engineering design and digital innovation.
  • Experience coaching students in STEM competitions, Olympiads or enrichment programmes would be advantageous.
  • Additional qualifications, certifications or expertise in Robotics, Coding, Engineering, Mechatronics or Computer Science will be advantageous.
  • First Aid certification is advantageous.
