The Role
Manager sought to control all aspects of the Liquor Store in George, ensuring profitability, legal compliance (liquor laws), excellent customer service, and efficient staff performance.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Store Operations
- Open and close the store according to procedures
- Ensure shelves are fully stocked, clean, and well merchandised
- Manage daily store activities and workflow
- Oversee cash handling, banking, and reconciliation.
Sales & Profitability
- Drive sales targets and promotions
- Monitor daily, weekly, and monthly sales performance
- Control expenses and reduce wastage/shrinkage
- Implement upselling and cross-selling strategies
Stock Control
- Order stock and manage supplier relationships
- Conduct stock takes and investigate variances
- Ensure correct pricing and product rotation (FIFO)
- Minimise losses (theft, damages, expired stock)
Staff Management
- Recruit, train, and develop staff
- Create staff schedules and manage attendance
- Handle discipline and performance management
- Motivate team to meet targets and deliver service
Customer Service
- Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction
- Handle complaints professionally
- Maintain a safe, welcoming store environment
Legal & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with liquor licensing laws
- Enforce no sale to minors and intoxicated persons
- Maintain required documentation and permits
- Ensure health & safety standards are followed
Security & Risk Management
- Prevent theft and manage security systems
- Conduct spot checks and monitor high-risk areas
- Ensure proper cash control procedures
Reporting & Administration
- Prepare daily/weekly reports (sales, stock, staff)
- Use systems (e.g., POS or Sigma if applicable)
- Analyse performance and take corrective action
Skills and Experience
REQUIREMENTS
- Matric (Grade 12) – essential
- Retail or business-related qualification – advantageous
- 2–5 years retail experience (liquor experience preferred)
- At least 1–2 years in a supervisory/management role

- Strong numerical and analytical skills
- Good communication and problem-solving
- Knowledge of liquor legislation
- Computer literacy (POS systems, reporting tools)
- Accountability and attention to detail

- Retail hours (weekends, public holidays, evenings)
- High-pressure, fast-paced environment
- Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Sales growth and stock loss percentage
