The Cost Accountant is responsible for managing and analysing the company's cost structures to support effective financial planning, budgeting, and operational decision-making. The role ensures accurate product costing, inventory valuation, cost reporting, and profitability analysis while maintaining compliance with accounting standards and company policies.
Cost Accounting
- Prepare and maintain accurate product and production cost models.
- Analyse direct and indirect manufacturing costs.
- Calculate standard costs and monitor variances against actual costs.
- Review and update Bills of Materials (BOMs) and costing structures.
- Conduct monthly cost analysis and investigate significant variances.
Inventory Management
- Reconcile inventory balances and perform inventory valuations.
- Participate in monthly and annual stock counts.
- Investigate inventory discrepancies and recommend corrective actions.
- Ensure accurate costing of raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods.
Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly cost reports and management reports.
- Assist with month-end and year-end financial closing processes.
- Prepare journal entries relating to inventory, production, and cost allocations.
- Support the preparation of annual budgets and forecasts.
Budgeting and Forecasting
- Assist with operational budgeting processes.
- Monitor expenditure against budgets.
- Analyse production efficiencies and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Provide financial insights to operational management.
Compliance and Internal Controls
- Ensure compliance with IFRS, company policies, and relevant South African legislation.
- Maintain effective internal controls over inventory and costing processes.
- Support internal and external audits.
- Ensure accurate documentation of costing procedures.
Business Support
- Partner with production, procurement, warehouse, and operations teams.
- Provide financial analysis to support operational decisions.
- Develop and improve costing models and reporting systems.
- Identify opportunities to improve profitability and operational efficiency.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or National Diploma in Accounting, Cost and Management Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CIMA qualification or progress towards CIMA will be advantageous.
- SAICA articles or equivalent experience will be beneficial.
Experience
- 3–5 years' experience in a Cost Accounting role.
- Experience within manufacturing, mining, agriculture, food processing, or industrial environments is preferred.
- Experience with ERP systems such as SAP, Syspro, Sage, or Microsoft Dynamics is advantageous.
