Personal Lines Underwriter

A reputable insurance company is looking for a skilled Personal Lines Underwriter with solid experience in underwriting motor, household, buildings, and personal all‑risk policies. The ideal candidate will be confident in processing high volumes of personal lines business, applying underwriting guidelines accurately, and providing professional support to brokers and clients. This role requires strong product knowledge across major insurers, excellent communication skills, and a high level of accuracy and compliance. The successful candidate will thrive in a fast‑paced environment, ensuring policies, endorsements, and renewals are handled efficiently and correctly.
Policy Processing & Administration
- Process new business, renewals, amendments, endorsements, and cancellations timeously and accurately
- Ensure all documentation is complete, correct, and compliant before processing
- Prepare quotations and rate policies according to underwriting guidelines
- Maintain accurate records, schedules, and policy files
- Diarise and follow up on outstanding requirements
Underwriting & Risk Assessment
- Assess personal lines risks (motor, household contents, buildings, all‑risk, etc.) according to insurer guidelines
- Apply underwriting criteria, loadings, exclusions, and terms where necessary
- Ensure all risks fall within underwriting mandates and do not exceed insurer limits
- Identify potential risks and escalate where required
- Maintain high knowledge of policy wordings, exclusions, and insurer product updates
Client & Broker Interaction
- Handle queries from brokers and clients with a 24‑hour turnaround time
- Provide clear, professional communication via email, telephone, or other channels
- Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients
- Offer guidance on product suitability, cover options, and underwriting requirements
Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with FAIS, insurer guidelines, and internal procedures
- Maintain a high standard of accuracy and quality in all documentation
- Identify gaps or errors and implement corrective actions
- Support internal teams with underwriting queries and product knowledge
General Administration
- Assist with general office administration as required
- Contribute to team targets, service standards, and operational efficiency
- Perform any reasonable additional duties requested by management
- Matric
- Completed Regulatory Exam: Representatives (RE5)
- Completed Short-Term Insurance Qualification (NQF 4)
- Must be FAIS compliant and registered as a Representative (not under supervision)
- Must NOT be debarred with the FSCA
- Minimum 3–5 years Personal Lines Underwriting experience within a brokerage or insurer environment
- Strong knowledge of personal lines products across major insurers
- Ability to process high volumes of policies accurately
- Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Excellent communication skills (verbal & written)
- Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
- Basic highly negotiable based on experience and qualifications
