The Legal Officer will provide legal support to Betway's Southern African business operations, with a primary focus on commercial contracts, legal advisory services, dispute management, corporate matters, and legal risk mitigation. The role requires a commercially minded attorney who can provide practical legal solutions while safeguarding the company's interests.

The successful candidate must be an admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa with at least two (2) years post-qualification experience and experience in drafting, reviewing, negotiating, and managing commercial agreements in a fast-paced corporate environment.

What You’ll Do

As part of your role, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Commercial Contracting.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and manage a wide range of commercial agreements, including:
    • Supplier and service provider agreements;
    • Marketing and sponsorship agreements;
    • Affiliate and partnership agreements;
    • Software licensing, infrastructure support, and SaaS agreements;
    • Intellectual property agreements;
    • Non-disclosure agreements;
    • Consultancy and professional services agreements.
  • Provide strategic legal support during contract negotiations with external parties.
  • Identify and mitigate contractual risks while supporting commercial objectives.
  • Develop and maintain contract templates.
  • Legal advisory - provide accurate, practical, and commercially focused legal advice to business stakeholders.
  • A strong understanding of and ability to provide advice on matters relating to:
    • Contract law;
    • Commercial law;
    • Company law;
    • Intellectual property;
    • Consumer protection legislation;
    • Advertising and marketing law;
    • Data protection and privacy requirements;
    • General business operations.
  • Conduct legal research.
  • Support business teams in evaluating legal risks associated with new products, partnerships, and commercial initiatives.
  • Corporate and Governance Support.
  • Assist with corporate governance matters and internal approvals.
  • Support company secretarial functions where required.
  • Prepare and review corporate documentation, resolutions, and related legal documents where necessary.
  • Maintain legal records and document repositories.
  • Disputes and legal risk management.
  • Assist in the management of litigation, arbitration, and other dispute resolution matters.
  • Liaise with external legal counsel and manage external legal spend where required.
  • Investigate legal claims and provide recommendations to the business on risk mitigation and resolution strategies.
  • Monitor emerging legal risks and support the implementation of risk management measures.
  • Stakeholder Management.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders across all business functions.
  • Deliver clear and practical legal guidance that enables commercial decision-making.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from an accredited university; and
  • Admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa.

Experience:

  • Minimum two (2) years post-qualification experience (PQE);
  • Experience gained at a reputable law firm and/or in-house legal department;
  • Demonstrated experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex commercial agreements;
  • Proven ability to independently manage legal matters and stakeholder relationships;
  • Competent computer literacy, including Microsoft Office application proficiency.
