Technical Documentation Specialist

Endless Summer Technologies, a manufacturing engineering division of Johnson Outdoors based in La Mercy Durban, is seeking a detail-oriented and technically minded Manufacturing Document Specialist to join our team in this exciting new role. This role is responsible for developing, maintaining, and controlling technical documentation that supports manufacturing operations, product assembly, and supplier integration.
The successful candidate will work closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and other cross-functional teams to ensure documentation is accurate, compliant, user-friendly, and aligned with current product and process requirements. This role plays a critical part in supporting operational efficiency, standardization, and continuous improvement throughout the product lifecycle.
What you will be doing
Documentation Development
- Develop, structure, and maintain technical documentation including work instructions, assembly manuals, troubleshooting guides, and engineering support materials.
- Create clear and effective visual content such as photographs, diagrams, and CAD-based illustrations to support technical documentation.
- Ensure documentation promotes safe, efficient, and standardized manufacturing practices while minimizing variation and rework.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and other stakeholders to gather, validate, and consolidate technical information.
- Partner with engineering and production teams throughout the product lifecycle to ensure documentation remains current and accurate.
- Ensure documentation aligns with applicable standards, procedures, and compliance requirements.
Document Control and Data Management
- Maintain and manage technical documentation within the Electronic Document Management System (EDMS).
- Ensure effective version control, document traceability, and accessibility for manufacturing users.
- Manage documentation in accordance with established standards, templates, and approval workflows.
Documentation Standards and Change Management
- Standardize and coordinate documentation formats across internal teams and external suppliers.
- Support Engineering Change Notice (ECN) and Engineering Change Order (ECO) processes by updating documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Ensure all required reviews and approvals are completed before implementation.
Operational Support and Continuous Improvement
- Provide technical documentation support to manufacturing teams by supplying accurate specifications, engineering data, and process information.
- Identify opportunities to improve documentation quality, usability, and standardization.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance operational efficiency and documentation effectiveness.
Other Duties
- Perform additional responsibilities and projects as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
- Preferred Bachelor’s degree: Mechanical Engineering or related field. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Matric as a minimum
- Minimum of 2 years' experience in technical writing, documentation management, or a related role within a manufacturing, engineering, or product development environment.
- Experience developing technical documentation and manufacturing work instructions is preferred.
- Proven experience developing structured, technically accurate documentation, including work instructions, assembly procedures, and engineering support materials.
- Ability to translate complex engineering concepts and manufacturing processes into clear, concise, and user-friendly documentation.
- Strong understanding of engineering documentation principles, including revision control, document formatting, version management, and compliance requirements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Experience working with Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMS).
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and maintain large volumes of documentation effectively.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to build collaborative relationships and engage effectively with stakeholders across all levels of the organization.
- Self-motivated, proactive, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
