Senior Engineer - PrEng Electrical

Amethyst Energy ( https://amethyst.energy) is seeking a highly experienced and technically accomplished Senior Electrical Engineer to join our growing engineering team. This is a senior leadership role within the engineering function, reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer. The successful candidate will serve as the primary technical authority for solar PV and BESS design, providing rigorous design review, statutory sign-off, and hands-on mentorship to a team of engineers.

This role is integral to the quality, compliance, and scalability of Amethyst Energy's engineering output across all active markets. The successful candidate will be expected to uphold the highest standards of engineering excellence and, over time, assume full design authority across the portfolio.

Design Authority & Technical Sign-Off

  • Review, approve, and take professional responsibility for solar PV and BESS designs produced by the engineering team
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant codes and standards including SANS, IEC, NRS 097, and applicable local regulations across operating jurisdictions
  • Review and approve single-line diagrams, electrical layouts, protection and earthing designs, and energy yield assessments
  • Maintain design quality control frameworks and engineering checklists across the team

Team Leadership & Mentorship

  • Lead and manage a team of engineers, providing day-to-day technical guidance, task allocation, and performance support
  • Mentor and develop junior and mid-level engineers through informal coaching, design reviews, and knowledge sharing
  • Foster a high-performance engineering culture grounded in accuracy, professional accountability, and continuous improvement
  • Support engineers in developing competency toward professional registration (PrEng) where applicable

Engineering Delivery

  • Oversee and contribute to the design of C&I solar PV and battery energy storage systems across South Africa and sub-Saharan African markets
  • Conduct and supervise site scoping, technical assessments, and feasibility studies
  • Provide technical oversight during project execution, including site visits, installation quality assurance, and commissioning support
  • Assist with licensing, permitting, and regulatory submissions as required
  • Contribute to the evaluation and qualification of new technologies, equipment, and suppliers

Collaboration & Reporting

  • Work closely with project managers, commercial teams, and external stakeholders to ensure engineering deliverables meet project requirements and timelines
  • Provide technical input to proposals, scopes of work, and client documentation as required
  • Report to the COO on engineering team capacity, quality, and delivery performance
  • Travel across the African continent as required by project demands

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PrEng) registration with ECSA — essential
  • Minimum 5 years of post-university professional experience in electrical engineering
  • Demonstrated proficiency in LV/MV electrical reticulation design
  • Strong working knowledge of South African electrical codes, standards, and regulations (SANS 10142, NRS 097, IEC)
  • Proficiency in industry-standard electrical design tools
  • Strong technical documentation skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel across sub-Saharan Africa
  • Own reliable transportation

Advantageous Experience

  • Experience in C&I solar PV and/or BESS design and delivery
  • Familiarity with PVsyst, Helioscope, AutoCAD, or equivalent design software
  • Exposure to cross-border African energy markets and their regulatory environments
  • Experience with commissioning of solar and storage systems
  • Track record of mentoring or managing junior engineers
