Senior Tailings Engineer

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Tailings Engineer to join their Johannesburg team. This is an excellent opportunity for a professionally registered Civil Engineer with extensive tailings and geotechnical experience to contribute to the design, assessment, and management of tailings storage facilities and associated infrastructure across Southern and West Africa.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design and assessment of tailings storage facilities and return water dams
• Plan, schedule, and manage engineering projects from inception to completion
• Conduct surveillance, inspections, and annual audits of tailings facilities
• Perform and review geotechnical investigations and stability analyses
• Undertake seepage and slope stability assessments using industry-standard software
• Coordinate subcontractors and multidisciplinary project teams
• Prepare technical proposals, reports, and engineering documentation
• Travel to project sites for field investigations, construction monitoring, and inspections
• Mentor and support graduate and junior engineers
• Build and maintain strong client relationships while supporting business development initiatives

Requirements

• BEng or BSc in Civil Engineering
• Professional registration as a PrEng with ECSA
• Minimum of 7 years' experience in tailings engineering
• Postgraduate qualification or experience in Geotechnical Engineering will be advantageous
• Strong understanding of soil mechanics, CPTu testing, and laboratory testing of soils and tailings
• Proven experience with geotechnical investigations and Tailings Dam Breach Assessments
• Minimum of 5 years' experience using GeoStudio, PLAXIS, Slide, or similar software for stability and seepage analysis
• Proficiency in MS Office, MS Project or Primavera, and AutoCAD Civil 3D or ModelMaker
• Valid driver's licence and passport
• Willingness to travel throughout South Africa and internationally
