Software Engineer (Embedded Systems & Legacy Modernisation)

Our client is seeking an experienced Software Engineer with a passion for modernising legacy software while contributing to the development of innovative embedded solutions. This role offers the opportunity to work alongside an Embedded Systems Engineer to enhance and evolve software powering South Africa's traffic monitoring and control infrastructure. If you enjoy solving complex technical challenges and transforming legacy applications into modern, maintainable systems, this could be the ideal opportunity.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, implement and maintain software components.
• Maintain and enhance an existing Delphi (Object Pascal) codebase.
• Assist in evaluating and implementing modern programming languages and development toolchains.
• Develop clean, efficient and well-documented software.
• Collaborate closely with hardware engineers during software integration.
• Participate in software design reviews and system architecture discussions.
• Develop and execute unit, integration and system-level testing.
• Troubleshoot, debug and resolve software defects.
• Produce and maintain technical documentation and design specifications.
• Contribute to software quality improvements and technology modernisation initiatives.

Minimum Requirements

• Tertiary qualification in Computer Science or a related engineering discipline.
• Minimum of 8 years' professional software development experience.
• Working knowledge of Delphi (Object Pascal) or the ability to maintain existing Delphi applications.
• Experience with C and/or modern programming languages such as C++, Rust, Python or Go.
• Knowledge of version control and software configuration management.
• Understanding of object-oriented design principles and software engineering best practices.

Advantageous Experience

• AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor or Claude.
• RTOS and multithreaded software development.
• Linux environments, Bash and Python scripting.
• Embedded software development and systems engineering methodologies.
