Construction OHS Officer – Head Office

Location: Head Office (Durban)

Reporting to: OHS Manager

About The Role

We’re looking for an experienced

Construction OHS Officer to join our OHS team at Head Office. This pivotal role ensures that all Boxer construction and development projects comply with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations, internal policies, and best practices. The position focuses on contractor management, risk identification and evaluation, and fostering strong external and internal stakeholder relationships.

Duties And Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement and audit contractor management policies and procedures.
  • Identify and evaluate construction risks across multiple projects, ensuring compliance with OHS Act, Construction Regulations, SANS and insurance requirements.
  • Maintain and update risk registers, project profiles, and reports.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders (Project Managers, Architects, Facilities & Development Management) and external stakeholders (Principal Contractors, Department of Labour, Insurance Companies).
  • Conduct physical site inspections, review health and safety files, and ensure adherence to project-specific OHS requirements.
  • Investigate incidents, make recommendations, and conduct follow-ups on corrective actions.
  • Provide hands-on training and mentoring to Principal Contractors on OHS practices.
  • Promote teamwork, self-management, and alignment with Boxer’s values.

Minimum Requirements

Requirements

  • Education: National Certificate in Construction Safety (National Diploma or 3-year Degree in Safety/Occupational Health and Safety advantageous).
  • Experience: Up to 3 years in construction, preferably with exposure to OHS and contractor management.
  • Professional Registration: SACPCMP (The South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions) preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of OHS Act, Construction Regulations, and relevant standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong relationship-building, problem-solving and project management skills.
  • Attention to detail, conceptual thinking and ability to work independently within broad guidelines.
  • Proficiency in relevant systems, processes and reporting tools (Aspirata-OHS System advantageous).
