Head of Network Operations

Badger & Bird Talent

Head of Network Operations (FNO)

Location: Johannesburg or Durban (Hybrid)

Salary: Up to R85,000 CTC per month (excluding incentives & bonuses)

Reports to: General Manager (Dotted line to Group Chief Network Officer)

Building a network is one thing; keeping it alive, optimised, and commercially viable is where the real battle is won.

If you're an experienced network operations leader who knows how to run a lean, highly structured FNO environment, this senior role gives you the direct mandate and the authority to take full control.

Reporting directly to the GM, you will step in as the senior leader responsible for network operations. You will immediately take the wheel to steady and guide the support and ISP management team, take complete control of the NOC, and manage the critical network of external contractors who handle repairs and maintenance across Gauteng, KZN, and other key regions.

While the majority of the Point of Presence (PoP) infrastructure is based in KZN, you will be based in JHB or Durban on a hybrid schedule. You can expect to travel to other regions on a planned basis to audit contractors and keep operations running smoothly, or occasionally at short notice when a major network incident demands a senior hand on the ground.

This is a high-level operational role for someone who understands the technical realities of fibre but excels at the commercial and strategic level: managing supplier budgets, enforcing strict SLAs, and de-risking the business through meticulous asset documentation.

The Immediate Priorities

  • Hands on the NOC and Support: Stabilise and lead the NOC and ISP management teams, implementing structured escalation paths to curb ticket volumes and drive proactive fault resolution.
  • Contractor Command: Act as the primary manager of the external contractors performing reactive repairs and scheduled maintenance across multiple provinces. You will hold them strictly to their SLAs and sign off on supplier invoices.
  • Proactive over Reactive: Transition the field operations from a firefighting model to a disciplined, scheduled maintenance and equipment audit cycle.
  • Protect the Business Assets: Lead the charge on clean record-keeping. You will ensure all network history, ONT deployments, stock tracking, and as-built documentation are centralised to remove institutional risk.

What You Need to Bring

  • Deep FNO Operational Expertise: You understand the operational lifecycles of fibre networks, NOC dynamics, and ISP support structures inside out.
  • Commercial and SLA Teeth: You are highly analytical, comfortable auditing supplier billing, and possess the weight to challenge contractor performance and manage operational budgets.
  • Systematic Leadership Style: You believe in structured processes, clean documentation, and holding teams accountable to KPIs like MTTR and network uptime.
