Junior to Mid-Level Embedded Firmware Engineer

Our client is looking for a Junior to Mid-Level Embedded Firmware Engineer to join a collaborative engineering team focused on developing and supporting embedded systems. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving technical challenges, maintaining embedded products, and working closely with experienced engineers while contributing to the ongoing evolution of innovative hardware and firmware solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain, support and enhance existing embedded firmware products.
  • Investigate, debug and resolve firmware defects in deployed systems.
  • Develop and implement firmware improvements and minor feature enhancements.
  • Analyse hardware schematics to assist with troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
  • Develop reliable, maintainable embedded firmware using industry best practices.
  • Participate in code reviews and technical discussions.
  • Support firmware testing, validation and product releases.
  • Assist with firmware version management and release documentation.
  • Follow established development processes, coding standards and version control practices.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a related field.
  • 2–6 years' commercial experience in Embedded C firmware development.
  • Strong proficiency in Embedded C.
  • Solid understanding of microcontrollers and peripheral interfaces.
  • Ability to read and interpret electronic schematics.
  • Experience debugging embedded systems using oscilloscopes, logic analysers and debuggers.
  • Experience using Git for version control.
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines within embedded development environments.
  • Good understanding of structured programming principles and modular firmware design.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.

Technical Skills

  • Embedded C (Essential)
  • UART, SPI, I²C and RS485 communication protocols.
  • Basic TCP/IP networking concepts.
  • Firmware architecture and state machine design.
  • Exposure to IoT security principles, including secure boot and OTA firmware updates.

Advantageous Experience

  • AT command interfaces.
  • GSM, LTE, WiFi or other wireless communication technologies.
  • Bootloaders and firmware update mechanisms.
  • IP networking concepts.
