FinOps Engineer (AWS and Azure) Johannesburg or Cape Town

We are seeking an experienced FinOps Engineer to join a leading enterprise organisation. This role focuses on driving cloud financial management across AWS and Microsoft Azure environments by improving cost visibility, automating FinOps processes, and supporting cloud cost optimisation initiatives.
You will work closely with Cloud Engineering, Finance, Architecture, Product Owners, Security, and Business stakeholders to ensure cloud spending is transparent, well governed, and continuously optimised while maintaining operational excellence.
Cloud Cost Management
• Develop and maintain cloud cost reporting across AWS and Azure.
• Improve tagging strategies, naming standards, and cost allocation models.
• Analyse cloud usage, billing trends, and cost drivers to identify optimisation opportunities.
• Ensure high-quality cloud financial data through regular validation and reporting.
• Support integration of cloud billing data with financial and reporting platforms.
Cloud Optimisation and Automation
• Identify opportunities to optimise compute, storage, databases, networking, and licensing costs.
• Build automation for rightsizing, scheduling, anomaly detection, budget alerts, and policy enforcement.
• Support Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, Azure Reservations, and other cloud cost optimisation initiatives.
• Develop dashboards, scripts, reports, and workflow automations to improve operational efficiency.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to embed cost-aware design principles into cloud solutions.
Reporting and Financial Planning
• Produce regular FinOps dashboards, cost reports, executive summaries, and savings reports.
• Assist with budgeting and forecasting through trend analysis and demand planning.
• Facilitate cost review sessions with technical and business teams.
• Track optimisation initiatives, realised savings, and implementation progress.
• Create self-service reporting for business and engineering stakeholders.
Governance and Compliance
• Implement cloud cost governance standards, tagging policies, and budget controls.
• Support internal audits and financial reporting requirements.
• Assist with cloud invoice reconciliation and financial reporting processes.
• Monitor compliance with cloud governance and cost management policies.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of FinOps practices and cloud governance.
Stakeholder Collaboration
• Promote FinOps best practices across technical and business teams.
• Coach application teams on cost optimisation and responsible cloud consumption.
• Contribute to operational documentation, playbooks, dashboards, and knowledge sharing.
• Stay up to date with AWS, Azure, and FinOps best practices.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Finance, Accounting, Business, Data Analytics, or a related field.
• FinOps Certified Practitioner certification is required, or willingness to obtain certification within an agreed timeframe.
• AWS or Microsoft Azure certifications will be advantageous.
Experience
• 5 to 8 years of experience in Cloud Engineering, Cloud Operations, FinOps, IT Financial Management, Infrastructure, or Technology Cost Management.
• Strong experience with AWS Billing, AWS Cost Explorer, AWS Budgets, Azure Cost Management, Azure Advisor, and cloud cost optimisation.
• Experience building dashboards, automation, reporting solutions, and cloud financial integrations.
• Experience working with enterprise stakeholders across Finance, Engineering, Security, Architecture, and Product teams.
• Experience within financial services or other highly regulated environments will be advantageous.
