Financial Manager

Matrix Software l meat processing software

Join a market-leading organisation making a difference in Africa! We’re looking for an experienced finance manager to support the organisation during an exciting phase of growth.

Why Join Us?

● Be part of a purpose-driven organisation unlocking Africa's food security through innovative software solutions.

● Market-leading enterprise software business serving Africa’s protein processing industry, with 300+ clients across 15+ countries — profitable, growing, and backed by an active private equity shareholder.

● Genuine opportunity to build a finance function from the ground up and shape the financial architecture of a scaling business.

● ManCo membership with direct Board and shareholder exposure — real strategic influence, not a back-office role.

● A hands-on, high-accountability team culture where strong performers have room to grow.

Job Purpose

The Financial Manager is a senior finance leadership role responsible for the financial strategy, governance, and financial performance of Matrix Software. This is a player-coach position: the role carries full strategic and leadership responsibility for the finance function, but the team is lean and the successful candidate must be willing and able to work hands-on across the full scope of finance while building the team, systems, and processes needed for scale. The Financial Manager will serve on the Management Committee (ManCo), function as a key strategic partner to the CEO and executive team, and work closely with the company’s private equity shareholder on board reporting, investment analysis, and governance. The role is positioned to grow into a CFO seat as the business scales.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Leadership

● Set and drive the company's financial strategy in support of growth, profitability, and long term sustainability.

● Act as a key financial and commercial advisor to the CEO and senior leadership team.

● Prepare and present reporting, forecasts, and strategic recommendations to the CEO, board, shareholders, and stakeholders.

Financial Planning & Analysis

● Own the annual budgeting, rolling forecasting, and cash flow planning processes.

● Enforce adherence to the approved annual budget, monitoring actual spend against plan and challenging material variances.

● Analyse business performance against plan and industry benchmarks, translating data into clear, actionable recommendations for the executive team.

● Monitor and report on key software/SaaS metrics (ARR, MRR, CAC, LTV, gross margin) to guide strategy, pricing, product, and investment decisions.

● Model scenarios for new revenue lines and business growth strategies and support shareholder financial analysis and reporting.

● Build and continuously improve the management reporting suite — monthly management accounts, board packs, and KPI dashboards — so that reporting is accurate, timely, and genuinely decision-useful.

● Build and own the costing models for hardware, software, consumables, and professional services offerings, performing the underlying cost calculations that drive pricing and margin decisions.

● Track and report project profitability across professional-services engagements — budget versus actual, recover ability, and margin.

Operational Financial Management

● Run the monthly close — general ledger integrity, reconciliations, and timely, accurate management accounts.

● Manage the day-to-day running of the accounting system (Xero), including multi-currency invoicing and billing across the client base.

  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and debtors’ collections in line with agreed credit policy.
  • Perform credit vetting and scoring on prospective clients before on-boarding.

● Oversee payroll, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant processing.

● Own procurement and vendor management, ensuring value for money, appropriate approval, and adequate control.

Financial Governance, Risk & Controls

● Design and maintain a robust internal control and risk management framework.

● Own the integrity of financial reporting, ensuring management accounts and annual financial statements are accurate, timely, and IFRS-compliant.

● Lead the annual audit relationship end-to-end, ensuring the finance team delivers audit ready information.

● Maintain the enterprise risk register, ensuring key financial, operational, and compliance risks are identified, owned, mitigated, and reported to the CEO and Board.

● Oversee the company’s insurance program, ensuring cover remains adequate and appropriately structured as the business grows.

● Own business continuity and disaster-recovery planning from a financial and operational resilience perspective.

Treasury & Capital Management

● Oversee banking relationships, credit facilities, foreign exchange exposure, and working capital.

● Set policy and approval frameworks for payments, credit terms, and debtors management. Tax & Regulatory Compliance

● Ensure the business meets all tax and statutory obligations (income tax, provisional tax, VAT, PAYE, UIF, SDL, dividend tax, transfer pricing, and digital services tax) through oversight of the tax function and external advisors.

  • Ensure accurate, timely employees’ tax reconciliations (EMP501, IRP5) and related statutory submissions.
  • Maintain the relationship with SARS, auditors, and regulators, ensuring compliance and good standing. Corporate Governance

● Ensure company secretarial and statutory compliance obligations are met (CIPC, statutory registers), delegating administrative execution while retaining accountability.

● Support the CEO on governance, legal, and HR matters at a strategic level. Legal & Contract Support

● Review commercial agreements — client contracts, supplier, and partner agreements — and flag commercial and financial risk before signature.

● Manage the relationship with external legal counsel, coordinating advice and containing legal spend. Team Leadership & People Management

● Lead, develop, and manage the finance team, building capability, structure, and succession.

● Set team priorities and performance standards; foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

Cross-Functional Business Partnering

● Partner with Product, Sales, CRM, Support, Professional Services and Operations leadership to align financial planning with commercial and operational goals, including pricing and costing frameworks for hardware, software, and project-based offerings.

Required Qualifications & Experience

● CA(SA) preferred; CIMA with strong relevant experience will be considered.

● 5 to 10 years' post-articles experience in a Financial Management role.

● 2 to 3 years' experience in a management/leadership capacity, with direct responsibility for managing a team.

● Proven experience within the software or technology industry, ideally within a medium-sized enterprise; familiarity with SaaS financial models and subscription-based revenue recognition is advantageous.

● Track record operating at a managerial level — comfortable setting direction and overseeing a function, while remaining hands-on in a lean team environment.

● Strong working knowledge of IFRS, taxation, and corporate governance requirements.

● Experience in multi-currency and multi-country Financial management.

● Excellent leadership, commercial acumen, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

● Fluent in Afrikaans and English, written and verbal — much of the business operates in Afrikaans.

● Ability to translate financial detail into clear strategic insight for non-finance executives.

● Proficiency with Xero accounting software; familiarity with integrated business systems (project management, CRM, time tracking) is advantageous.

Performance Metrics

● Quality and strategic value of financial insight and recommendations provided to the CEO and board.

● Achievement of profitability and growth targets.

● Strength of the financial control, risk, and governance environment.

● Improvement in financial KPIs (ARR, CAC, LTV, gross margin).

● Finance team capability, development, and retention.

Remuneration

Market-related CTC, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Performance-based incentives available.
