Our client an Accounting Firm, requires the services of a Tax Compliance Officer to join their team. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a broad range of tax compliance matters for individuals, companies, trusts and exempt institutions.
Key performance areas
- Preparation and submission of supporting documents as per SARS requirements
- Download, capturing and checking of assessments and preparation of letters
- Preparation and completion of request for tax information letters
- Requesting information, accurately calculating, completing and understanding client income tax returns, including IT12 individual returns, company returns, trust returns and exempt institution returns.
- Resolving queries from SARS and clients regarding all tax matters
- Accurately preparing, calculating and submitting IRP6 provisional tax returns for first, second and third periods across all year ends, including client correspondence and SARS submissions.
- Preparation and attending to various tax payments on behalf of clients
- Meeting and liaising with clients regarding tax matters when necessary
- Application for Tax Clearance Certificates in respect of good standing, tenders, immigration and foreign investments
- Application for all Tax Directives which includes preparation of estimated income and expenses statements
- Notifying SARS of changes to year-ends, conversions, name changes and other amendments.
- Meeting with SARS tax practitioner’s unit to resolve client queries urgently
- Attending to EMP501 reconciliations and IRP5 / IT3(a) certificates including gathering and compiling payroll schedules
- Preparing tax billing pro forma invoices based on client work-in-progress reports and meeting with the Director for review and approval.
- Following up on Tax Refunds and assessments not yet finalized by SARS
- Maintaining ProfTax, including data capturing and adding or updating client records.
- Checking new clients’ tax status during client onboarding.
- Registering new clients and maintaining the client database on SARS eFiling.
- Preparing files for handover when clients resign.
- Assisting the audit department with tax information.
- Sending client correspondence regarding tax deadlines.
- Staying up to date with SARS amendments and implementing relevant changes to tax legislation and procedures.
- Providing tax training and support to clerks, vacation students, job shadow workers and junior staff.
- Completing and submitting PAYE and VAT returns based on information provided by clients.
- Checking tax computations for companies and exempt institutions.
- Preparing and completing tax exemption application forms, requesting supporting documents and submitting applications to the SARS Tax Exemption Unit.
- Dealing with SARS monitoring office in respect of tax related issues with SARS
- Dealing with SARS Collections in respect of deferred payment arrangement applications and applications for compromise.
- Analysing PAYE, UIF and VAT accounts and preparing reconciliations for unallocated payments.
- Attending to deregistration for income tax, VAT and PAYE.
- Managing COID registration, annual ROE submissions, audits and deregistration matters.
- Dealing with SARS Large Business Centre with regards to various queries
- Preparing alternative dispute resolution requests, notices of objection, disputes against penalty assessments and notices of appeal in respect of income tax and administrative penalties.
- Calculating capital gains, including the time-apportionment method where applicable.
- Attending to engagement letters and special powers of attorney required for tax work.
- Preparation and completion of turnover tax returns
The successful candidate must have
- Matric with a Tax Practitioner or related qualification
- Must have at least 2+ years’ experience in a tax compliance role
- ProfTax experience will be advantageous
- Excellent computer literacy (MS Office – Outlook, Word & Excel)
- Excellent analytical skills , attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
- Excellent written & verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
- Excellent time management skills
- Strong administration skills and a good understanding of organisational processes and practices
- Must have a driver’s licence and own reliable transport
