Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric)
  • Recognised Boilermaker Trade Test (Red Seal)
  • Valid driver's licence (Code B minimum)

Minimum 3 to 5 years post-trade experience in:

  • Steel manufacturing
  • Engineering
  • Plant maintenance
  • Workshop fabrication
  • Experience on mobile equipment is essential

Advantageous Qualifications:

  • Welding certification
  • Working at Heights certification
  • Confined Space certification
  • Forklift licence
  • Valid Code EC driver's licence

The successful candidate must demonstrate competency in:

  • Reading engineering drawings
  • Measuring and marking out
  • Plate development
  • Structural fabrication
  • Welding
  • Oxy-fuel cutting
  • Plasma cutting
  • Grinding
  • Rigging fundamentals
  • Equipment alignment
  • Mechanical fitting assistance
  • Hydraulic component removal and installation
  • Safe lifting practices

Working knowledge of:

The position requires the ability to:

  • Lift heavy components within safe manual handling limits

Plant Equipment Maintenance

Maintain and repair fixed plant equipment including but not limited to:

  • Conveyors
  • Chutes
  • Hoppers
  • Bins and silos
  • Crushers
  • Screens
  • Feeders
  • Structural steelwork
  • Platforms
  • Walkways
  • Handrails
  • Guarding
  • Processing equipment
  • Pipework
  • Tanks
  • Pressure vessels (where legally authorised)
  • Maintenance shutdown work

Movable Equipment Maintenance

Repair and maintain mobile and transport equipment including:

  • Truck bodies
  • Trailers
  • Skip bins
  • Roll-on Roll-off containers
  • Tippers
  • Earthmoving attachments
  • Loading buckets
  • Excavator buckets
  • Grapples
  • Material handling attachments
  • Lifting frames
  • Steel transport racks
  • Waste containers
  • Mobile equipment structural repairs

Fabrication

Manufacture components from engineering drawings including:

  • Structural steel
  • Brackets
  • Frames
  • Guards
  • Supports
  • Platforms
  • Staircases
  • Pipe supports
  • Chutes
  • Wear liners
  • Machine modifications
  • Custom fabricated components

Welding

Perform welding using approved procedures including:

  • MIG
  • Stick
  • Gouging
  • Cutting
  • Grinding
  • Ensure weld quality meets company and engineering standards

Preventative Maintenance:

  • Conduct routine inspections
  • Identify defects before failures occur
  • Report equipment deterioration
  • Replace worn components
  • Lubricate where required
  • Assist with planned maintenance shutdowns
  • Complete preventative maintenance schedules

Respond to equipment failures by:

  • Diagnosing faults
  • Carrying out emergency repairs
  • Fabricating replacement parts
  • Working safely under pressure
  • Restoring production as quickly as possible
