General Assistant - Fibre

The General Assistant supports fibre installation operations by assisting technicians,

handling basic administrative tasks, maintaining tools and equipment, and ensuring

efficient day-to-day site activities. This role is ideal for someone hands-on, reliable, and

eager to learn about fibre network installations.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Support

  • Assist fibre installation technicians on-site with cabling, digging, and equipment

setup

  • Help with loading, unloading, and transporting materials and tools
  • Prepare work sites by clearing debris and ensuring safety standards are met
  • Carry out basic installation tasks under supervision (e.g., cable pulling, trench

preparation)

  • Support maintenance and repair tasks when required

Logistics & Equipment Handling

  • Maintain inventory of materials, tools, and equipment
  • Ensure all tools are clean, safe, and operational
  • Assist in tracking usage of fibre materials (cables, connectors, ducts)
  • Report damaged or missing equipment

Administrative Support

  • Assist with documentation such as job sheets, installation reports, and checklists
  • Capture basic data related to completed installations
  • Support coordination between teams and supervisors

Health & Safety Compliance

  • Follow company health and safety procedures at all times
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Report hazards, accidents, or unsafe conditions immediately

Skills & Competencies

  • Basic understanding of construction or technical work (fibre knowledge is an

advantage)

  • Good physical fitness and ability to perform manual labour
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to learn
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions
  • Basic problem-solving abilities

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric certificate (or equivalent)
  • Valid driver’s license (advantageous)
  • Previous experience in construction, telecoms, or technical environments

(preferred but not required)

  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Flexibility to work overtime or travel when required

Working Conditions

  • Field-based role involving outdoor work
  • Exposure to construction environments
  • May require lifting heavy equipment
  • Travel to various installation sites
