Surveyor

P & I Associates has a vacancy for a Surveyor based in our Cape Town and Richards Bay region.

• Receive and interpret survey instructions from P&I Club, vessel agents, owners, or charterers.

• Coordinate with vessel agents and port authorities for vessel scheduling and location details.

• Prepare and manage survey files, ensuring proper documentation is maintained.

• Assess resources required for surveys and liaise with service providers for quotations.

• Schedule and confirm survey appointments with relevant parties and authorities.

• Conduct pre-survey meetings to gather necessary documentation and align procedures.

• Perform physical inspections of cargo and storage methods to ensure compliance with standards.

• Inspect containers for condition and packing procedures during loading and unloading.

• Conduct tests on dry bulk cargo and submit samples for laboratory analysis.

• Observe and document stevedoring operations during cargo loading and unloading.

• Prepare endorsements for Mate’s Receipts and Bill of Lading as required.

• Investigate incidents, collect information and engage with relevant parties.

• Analyze survey findings and compile detailed reports with recommendations.

• Participate in discussions with stakeholders on survey outcomes and issues.

• Address queries regarding survey operations and communication related procedures.

• Contribute insights into maritime literature based on survey experiences.

• Verify invoices from service providers and ensure the accuracy of financial documentation.

• Maintain up-to-date records in the Survey File for administrative processing and archiving.

• Matric (grade 12)

• Completed Diploma or Degree in Maritime Studies, or a related field.

• Min 3-5 years of industry experience

• Computer literate (Excel and MS Word),

• Strong knowledge of vessel operations, cargo handling, and surveying procedures.

• Proficiency in using calibrated instruments for inspections and conducting tests.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with various stakeholders.

• Ability to analyze data, compile reports, and present findings clearly.

• Familiarity with regulations and standards in maritime operations and safety.

• Experience in undertaking the following tasks will be an advantage: draft surveys, cargo hold & hatch cover inspections, Group A/B/C cargo inspections.

• Strong attention to detail and ability to identify discrepancies in documentation.

• Visible initiative and drive together with flexibility are key attributes required,

• The ability to work independently under pressure according to tight deadlines is imperative,

• Further critical attributes include a meticulous approach, attention to detail and a high level of conscientiousness,

• Available to work outside of normal working hours as/ when required

• Drivers licence (Code 08)
