Operations Manager: Grain (Swellendam)

SSK currently has the following career opportunity in their Grain Department in Swellendam. The successful candidate will report to the Senior Manager: Grain and must possess an appropriate qualification and at least 5 years of proven management experience in grain handling and storage disciplines.

Position Requirements

• Operational management and supervision of daily silo and grain operations.
• Reporting to the Senior Manager: Grain regarding operational performance, inventory, safety, and personnel.
• Strategic planning, coordination, and optimization of silo activities to ensure efficient operations.
• Management of grain intake, grading, storage, and dispatch processes.
• Supervision of quality control and the maintenance of high-quality standards for all grain products.
• Maintenance of sound silo management practices and compliance with statutory requirements.
• Application of disciplinary processes in accordance with SSK’s policies and procedures.
• Ensuring occupational health, safety, and hygiene standards in all work areas.
• Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in silos, sheds, and operational facilities.
• Effective inventory control and accurate administration of grain movements.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
• Good dispute resolution and problem-solving skills.
• Leadership through staff support, guidance, performance management, and training.
• Ability to motivate staff and foster a positive, productive work environment.
• Punctuality, reliability, and excellent time management.
• Keen attention to detail and the ability to ensure accuracy in all processes.
• Accurate record-keeping and reporting to management.
• Technical and mechanical aptitude with the ability to identify and resolve operational issues.
• Willingness to work long hours, especially during the harvest and peak seasons.
• Willingness to travel between SSK’s grain storage facilities.
• Ability to perform under pressure and make timely decisions in a dynamic work environment.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of Matric (Grade 12). Relevant post-school qualification in Agriculture, Grain Handling, Silo Management, or a related field would be an advantage.
• Successful completion of grading courses in:
  • Winter grains
  • Summer grains
  • Oilseeds
• Qualified in grain fumigation.
• Preferably registered as a P-Registration Fumigator.
• Valid Code B (Code 08) driver's license.
• Computer literacy in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
• Willingness to undergo further training and professional development in grain handling, quality control, and silo operations.
