PLC & SCADA Programmer

We are seeking an experienced, motivated, and well-rounded PLC & SCADA Programmer with a strong electrical background to join our engineering team on a permanent basis. This role is ideal for a hands-on professional who thrives on taking a project from a blank sheet through to a running plant — writing control code from scratch, understanding the electrical hardware behind it, and executing on-site commissioning. You will become a key, long-term member of our team, working on challenging projects both locally and internationally.

Key Responsibilities

• PLC Development: Develop robust control software from scratch using Siemens STEP 7 Classic, TIA Portal, and Allen-Bradley Studio 5000.
• HMI/SCADA Design: Develop and maintain applications using Siemens WinCC (Comfort, Professional, Unified) and Rockwell FactoryTalk View.
• Hardware Configuration: Configure, test, and commission Siemens S7-300/S7-1500 and Allen-Bradley ControlLogix/CompactLogix systems.
• Electrical Schematics: Interpret, produce, and mark up electrical drawings using EPLAN and/or AutoCAD Electrical.
• Drive & Field Integration: Configure variable speed drives (VSDs), servo systems, remote I/O, and integrate a variety of industrial instrumentation and sensors.
• Industrial Networking: Configure and troubleshoot networks including Profinet, Profibus DP, and EtherNet/IP.
• Testing & Commissioning: Lead Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), loop checks, I/O testing, fault-finding, and system optimisation on-site.
• Project Support: Assist with electrical hardware selection, Bill of Materials (BOM) generation, control panel design support, and comprehensive project documentation.

Minimum Requirements

• Proven experience programming Siemens PLCs (STEP 7 / TIA Portal) and Allen-Bradley PLCs (Studio 5000) from a blank project.
• Strong SCADA/HMI development skills.
• Solid industrial electrical background with the ability to read and engineer electrical drawings.
• Field experience with commissioning, network diagnostics, and on-site fault-finding.
• Valid South African driver’s licence and own reliable transport.
• South African residency and a willingness to travel locally and internationally to customer sites.
• National Diploma, BTech, or Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Control, Automation, or Instrumentation Engineering.

Advantageous Experience & Qualifications

• Advanced Siemens: Siemens Safety Integrated, WinCC Unified, and Motion Control / Technology Objects.
• Robotics Integration: Experience with Yaskawa, Fanuc, ABB, KUKA robotic systems.
• Machine Safety: Familiarity with safety systems and components (Pilz, Sick, Fortress, etc.).
• Design Tools: Proficiency in EPLAN Electric P8.
• Industry Experience: Background within food & beverage, packaging, or automotive manufacturing environments.
