PURPOSE OF ROLE
The Appointed Person exists to ensure the safe execution of construction, operational, and commissioning activities on site, acting as the responsible person for issuing permits and conducting electrical and mechanical isolations.
The role provides suitable advice and assistance to the employer and contractors on the measures needed for the safe and healthy execution of work, ensures compliance with OHSA and site safety requirements, and supports the plant through operation, commissioning, and performance testing. The Appointed Person also coordinates work across engineering, operations, and project teams, and leads and mentors supervisors, artisans, and contractors to promote a strong safety culture and operational excellence.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
- Issue permits and conduct electrical and mechanical isolations in line with site procedures.
- Provide suitable advice and assistance to the employer and contractors on measures needed for safe and healthy execution of work.
- Ensure work performed under permit is controlled and monitored throughout.
- Ensure compliance with OHSA, site safety procedures, and client requirements, and implement measures for incident prevention.
- Make suitable arrangements for the co-ordination of health and safety measures during planning and preparation for the execution of work.
- Identify hazards and co-ordinate work activities to mitigate risk.
- Operate the plant and its various sub-systems.
- Assist the commissioning team during commissioning, performance testing, and reliability testing phases of the project.
- Coordinate work activities with engineering, operations, and project teams.
- Assist with planning shutdowns, outages, and commissioning activities.
- Maintain accurate progress reports and site documentation.
- Lead and mentor supervisors, artisans, and contractors; allocate work and monitor team performance.
- Conduct daily coordination and planning meetings, and build positive relationships with clients and stakeholders.
- Promote continuous improvement, operational excellence, and a strong safety culture.
QUALIFICATION
- Appointed Person (AP) authorisation, or successfully completed Operator and Plant Safety training at an Eskom station.
- National Certificate (NQF Level 4) as an Electrical or Mechanical Artisan, or a National Diploma in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
- Valid Trade Test, where applicable.
- OHSA and Construction Regulations training.
- HV Regulation training.
- Training in conducting Risk Assessments
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 5 years' experience in construction, maintenance, or power generation.
- Minimum 2 years' experience in an Operator or Appointed Person role.
- Experience conducting Risk Assessments.
- Experience working with Permit-to-Work systems and electrical isolations.
- Experience within power generation, industrial plants, or heavy engineering environments advantageous.
