COMPLIANCE MANAGER (SM)

Umfolozi Sugar Mill (USM) is an iconic sugar mill located in Mtubatuba, 48km from Richards Bay and 30kms from St Lucia. It is nestled between the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal and the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park inland. Founded in 1913, USM has become a leading producer of high-quality VHP brown sugar, crushing more than 1.3 million tons of cane per season, producing 135,000 tons of VHP sugar and 40,000 tons of molasses

USM seeks an experienced, dynamic Compliance Manager to lead its Compliance department. Reporting to the Production Director, the role oversees Health & Safety, Environmental Management, Food Safety & Quality Assurance, Security, and Cleaning/Contractor Services and provides an Integrated Management System for production. The incumbent will manage business and production risks, ensure adherence to all statutory and certification requirements, safeguard the company's integrity, and drive continuous improvement across all compliance areas.

KEY FOCUS AREAS

•Lead and improve USM’s ISO-aligned Integrated Management System (IMS) across all compliance areas.

•Ensure full compliance with applicable legislation and standards (OHSA, NEMA, food safety, CPA, COIDA, POPIA).

•Drive audits, inspections, risk management and certification (FSSC 22000, NOSA 5-Star, Kosher, Halaal).

•Lead incident investigations and corrective / preventative actions to closure.

•Manage outsourced contracted service providers, contractor compliance and site-access / dispatch controls.

•Control compliance budgets and champion LEAN and ESG / sustainability readiness.

•Engage with customers, regulators and leadership to promote a strong compliance culture.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree in OHS / Environmental Science / Food Science / Risk Management or related field.

• Postgraduate qualification (advantageous).

• Professional compliance designation with CPrac (SA) and Compliance Professional (CISA)(advantageous).

• Sound knowledge and experience on NEBOSH / SAMTRAC; ISO 45001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and FSSC 22000 / ISO 22000 Lead Auditor (advantageous).

• SACPCMP registration and LEAN / Quality Management training (advantageous).

• Minimum 8–10 years' compliance / SHEQ / FSSC/ISO 22000, risk management experience, including 3–5 years at senior management level in manufacturing or food production.

• Sound knowledge of the OHS Act, COIDA, environmental & food-safety legislation, CPA, POPIA, ISO 31000 risk practice, and contractor management.

• Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, ISO/FSSC standards, audits, and certification management.

• Proven leadership, stakeholder management, and policy development experience.

• Relevant professional certifications (Compliance Practitioner, NEBOSH, SAMTRAC, HACCP, ISO Lead Auditor) advantageous.

• Advanced Microsoft Office proficiency.
