Mining Payroll Manager - Orkney

A well-established organisation within the mining sector, based in Orkney, North West, is seeking an experienced and highly competent Payroll Manager to take responsibility for the full payroll function within a complex mining environment.

This is an opportunity for a seasoned payroll professional who has 10-15 years' payroll experience within the mining sector and understands the unique payroll requirements associated with a large, operational and often unionised workforce.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the full end-to-end payroll function, ensuring accurate and timely processing of monthly payroll.
  • Oversee payroll administration for a large and diverse workforce, including weekly/monthly payroll processes where applicable.
  • Ensure accurate processing of salaries, wages, overtime, allowances, bonuses, shift premiums, leave, deductions and benefits.
  • Manage payroll-related statutory requirements and ensure compliance with SARS, UIF, SDL, PAYE and other applicable legislation.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant Mining sector requirements, company policies, collective agreements and bargaining council/union agreements.
  • Manage and maintain accurate employee payroll records and ensure the integrity of payroll master data.
  • Oversee payroll reconciliations, payroll reports, audits and month-end payroll processes.
  • Work closely with HR, Finance, Operations and other stakeholders to ensure accurate payroll information and effective resolution of payroll-related queries.
  • Manage payroll queries and provide guidance and support to employees, managers and HR.
  • Ensure appropriate controls are in place to minimise payroll errors, fraud and financial risk.
  • Prepare payroll reports and provide relevant payroll analytics and information to management.
  • Manage payroll audits and provide supporting information to internal and external auditors.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, payroll procedures and relevant employment legislation.
  • Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes, systems, controls and efficiencies.
  • Lead, manage and develop the payroll team, ensuring high standards of accuracy, service delivery and accountability.
  • Stay abreast of changes to payroll legislation, taxation, labour legislation and mining-sector remuneration practices.

REQUIREMENTS

  • 10-15 years' proven payroll experience within the mining sector.
  • Extensive experience managing payroll within a large, complex operational environment.
  • Strong understanding of mining-sector payroll practices, including shift work, overtime, allowances and other industry-specific remuneration elements.
  • Solid knowledge of South African payroll legislation, including PAYE, UIF and SDL.
  • Experience working with unionised workforces and collective agreements will be advantageous.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll systems and HR/payroll processes.
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong numerical and analytical ability.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
  • Strong problem-solving and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet strict payroll deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills.
  • A relevant Payroll, Finance, HR or Accounting qualification will be advantageous.
