Join a leading private hospital in Gauteng as a PICU Qualified Registered Nurse. We are seeking a highly skilled, compassionate, and dedicated nursing professional with Paediatric Intensive Care Unit experience, strong clinical expertise, and a passion for delivering exceptional care to critically ill infants, children, and adolescents.
- Deliver comprehensive, evidence-based nursing care to critically ill infants, children, and adolescents within the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.
- Perform comprehensive and ongoing patient assessments, promptly identifying and responding to changes in the patient's clinical condition.
- Provide specialised nursing care to ventilated, haemodynamically unstable, and high-acuity paediatric patients requiring intensive monitoring and intervention.
- Monitor and manage paediatric patients receiving advanced respiratory support, invasive monitoring, infusion therapies, and other critical care interventions.
- Safely administer prescribed medications, intravenous therapies, blood products, inotropes, sedatives, analgesics, and other treatments in accordance with paediatric protocols and hospital policies.
- Operate and monitor specialised PICU equipment, including mechanical ventilators, infusion pumps, invasive monitoring devices, and other critical care technology.
- Monitor vital signs, ECG rhythms, blood results, arterial blood gases, and other diagnostic information to support timely clinical decision-making.
- Assist with emergency procedures, resuscitations, intubations, central line insertions, and other critical care interventions within the PICU.
- Collaborate closely with paediatricians, intensivists, physicians, allied healthcare professionals, and the multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive patient documentation in accordance with legal, ethical, and professional standards.
- Ensure strict compliance with infection prevention and control measures, patient safety standards, and quality assurance protocols.
- Provide compassionate emotional support, guidance, and education to parents and families during challenging and stressful periods.
- Participate in discharge planning and facilitate the safe transfer of patients to high care units, paediatric wards, or other appropriate healthcare facilities.
- Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and the implementation of evidence-based practices within the PICU.
- Mentor, supervise, and support junior nursing staff, students, and newly appointed team members.
- Maintain professional competency through continuous professional development and adherence to SANC standards and regulations.
- Demonstrate the ability to remain calm, compassionate, and clinically effective in a high-pressure, fast-paced paediatric critical care environment.
Education
- Diploma/Degree in Nursing.
- Postgraduate Diploma/Qualification in Child Critical Care Nursing Science.
- PICU experience and/or relevant paediatric critical care training is essential.
- Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Registered/General Nurse.
Experience & Skills
- Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience within an ICU, PICU, or critical care environment.
- Previous experience caring for critically ill paediatric patients is essential.
- Sound knowledge of paediatric critical care nursing principles and best practices.
- Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure PICU environment.
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
- BLS certification advantageous.
- PALS/APLS and ACLS certification advantageous.
