Qualified Electrician & Instrument Technician - MV Substation / Petrochemical Shutdown

We are urgently seeking suitably qualified and experienced Qualified Electricians / Instrument Technicians for a major shutdown project at Sasol Secunda.

The shutdown scope includes Medium Voltage (MV) substation tasks, requiring technicians with strong electrical knowledge and solid instrumentation capability.

Important Client Requirement: This scope cannot be executed by a standard electrician unless the individual is properly trained and competent to perform MV work. Candidates must therefore have the appropriate MV training, experience, and competency where required.

Candidates with previous Sasol shutdown, petrochemical, MV substation, electrical, and instrumentation experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical & MV Substation

- Perform electrical installation, maintenance, testing, fault-finding, and repairs.

- Work on Medium Voltage (MV) substation equipment and systems as required.

- Carry out MV electrical tasks in accordance with approved procedures and safety requirements.

- Perform testing and commissioning of electrical equipment.

- Read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.

- Identify and troubleshoot electrical faults.

- Ensure all MV work is performed safely and only within the individual's level of training and competency.

Instrumentation

- Install, maintain, test, and repair instrumentation equipment.

- Perform instrument calibration and testing.

- Conduct loop checks and assist with commissioning activities.

- Read and interpret instrumentation drawings, loop diagrams, and related documentation.

- Fault-find and troubleshoot instrumentation systems.

- Support electrical and instrumentation activities associated with the MV substation scope.

- Ensure instrumentation work complies with project specifications and site requirements.

Minimum Requirements

- Qualified Electrician / Electrical Trade Certificate.

- Instrumentation qualification or proven instrumentation competency is highly advantageous and important for this scope.

- MV training and competency – essential for candidates performing MV substation work.

- Previous experience working on Medium Voltage substations will be highly advantageous.

- Minimum 3–5 years' relevant industrial experience.

- Petrochemical, oil & gas, heavy industrial, or shutdown experience is highly advantageous.

- Previous Sasol experience/shutdown experience will be advantageous.

- Strong knowledge of electrical installation, maintenance, testing, fault-finding, and commissioning.

- Strong instrumentation knowledge, including installation, calibration, testing, loop checking, and fault-finding.

- Good understanding of electrical and instrumentation safety requirements.

- Ability to work safely in a high-risk petrochemical environment.

- Valid driver's licence – advantageous.

- Must be medically fit to work on a petrochemical site.

- Valid medical fitness certificate – advantageous.

- Valid Sasol induction – advantageous.

Important Client Requirement

The shutdown project includes Medium Voltage substation activities that require a technician with solid instrumentation capability.

A normal electrician without the required MV training, competency, and experience will not be suitable for this scope. Candidates must only undertake MV work for which they are appropriately trained, authorised, and competent.
