Underwriter (Commercial & Marine)

Our client, a well-established insurance administration business, is looking to appoint two Underwriting Administrators to support their Marine and Commercial Lines portfolios in the Western Cape. The role sits within a client-serving, FAIS-compliant intermediary services environment and centres on providing clients, brokers and insurers with accurate information and an efficient, professional service. The successful candidates will report to the Team Leader and take ownership of a portfolio across the full underwriting cycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Liaise with existing and prospective clients, providing accurate and appropriate information on policy covers, terms and conditions
- Build and maintain positive relationships with clients, brokers, insurers and suppliers
- Process quotes, new business, renewals and endorsements accurately and within agreed turnaround times
- Adhere to the Service Level Agreements set by the company
- Maintain accurate records and manage files, correspondence and diary on an ongoing basis
- Study insurance products and proposals, gathering and assessing relevant background information
- Assess and calculate risk using risk assessments, actuarial information, available statistics and own judgement
- Determine correct and competitive premiums and fees, and negotiate terms with insurers and brokers
- Specify the conditions to be imposed on different types of policies
- Keep detailed records of all policies underwritten and decisions made
- Manage credit control across the client portfolio
- Support the growth of administration fee income on the allocated portfolio
- Keep abreast of developments, products and regulatory changes within the industry
Requirements
- FAIS compliant, with a relevant qualification and RE Exam completed
- Class of Business training, where applicable
- Minimum of 3 years' relevant underwriting or insurance administration experience
- Marine and/or Commercial Lines exposure will be advantageous
- Strong attention to detail with a systematic and thorough approach
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong conflict handling and problem-solving ability
- Highly competent on the MS Office suite, with experience in a paperless and workflow-driven environment
- A team player with a strong focus on service delivery, professionalism and integrity
- Able to work under pressure while maintaining good humour and effectiveness
Benefits
Salary: R30 000 - R45 000 CTC Per Month Depending on experience
- Discretionary performance bonus paid in December, subject to both company and individual targets being met (no guaranteed 13th cheque)
- Hybrid working model: two days per week from home, with the balance of the week on-site
