Draughtsman - Johannesburg South

The Draughtsman is responsible for creating detailed technical drawings, designs, and schematics using CAD software, ensuring that all designs meet engineering standards, client specifications, and regulatory requirements. The role ensures compliance with ISO14001, ISO9001, and ISO45001 standards by contributing to quality, environmental, and safety management systems.

Drafting and Design

Produce detailed 2D and 3D drawings and designs using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or other CAD software based on the engineering specifications.

Ensure drawings conform to company standards, client requirements, and engineering best practices.

Incorporate changes and updates to drawings based on feedback from engineers or project managers.

Assist in design modifications to improve the performance, safety, and environmental sustainability of products.

Site Scanning and Measurements

Conduct on-site scanning and confirm measurements to gather accurate data for drawing creation.

GPS Surveying

Utilize GPS surveying equipment to capture and document geographical information relevant to the project.

Labeling and Confirmation of Site Equipment

Label and confirm equipment on-site to accurately reflect the physical layout.

P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams)

Interpret and create P&IDs based on project requirements.

Coordinate with process engineers to accurately represent piping, instrumentation, and control systems.

Collaboration

Work closely with engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders to clarify design details, resolve discrepancies, and ensure designs are feasible.

Documentation and Control

Maintain all design documents and drawings as per ISO9001 requirements for document control and revision management.

Ensure that designs meet compliance with ISO45001 safety standards, addressing any occupational health and safety risks.

Quality Assurance

Verify that designs are accurate and complete and ensure that quality checks are done prior to submitting drawings for approval.

Risk Analysis and Mitigation

Conduct risk assessments for projects, considering environmental, health, safety, and financial risks.

Process Improvement

Continuously identify opportunities for process improvements to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.

Implement Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles to minimize waste and variability.

Environmental and Safety Compliance

Contribute to design initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impacts in line with ISO14001 standards (e.g., minimizing material waste, energy use, and emissions).

Integrate safety considerations into designs, ensuring compliance with ISO45001, identifying potential hazards, and proposing preventive measures.

Reporting

Prepare and present project cost reports, profitability analyses, and variance reports to management.

Continuous Improvement

Review and enhance estimating procedures to align with current market trends and best practices.

Participate in internal and external audits to ensure ongoing ISO certification.

• Diploma in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering, or equivalent qualification in draughting.
• Certification in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or relevant CAD software.
• Knowledge of ISO14001, ISO9001, and ISO45001 standards.

What experience (e.g. previous exposure) does the job require?

• 3+ years of experience as a Draughtsman in an Industrial Refrigeration engineering or construction environment.
• Proven experience on systems such as Advanced Steel, Revit and Plant 3D.
• Experience working with ISO9001, ISO14001, and ISO45001 management systems is advantageous.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

Technical Skills

• Proficiency in AutoCAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar).
• Strong technical drawing and design skills with attention to detail.
• Good knowledge of engineering principles and practices.

Leadership and Management skills

• Strong leadership and team management skills.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work in varying environments (indoor/outdoor) and at heights when necessary.
• Physically fit to handle welding equipment and materials.
