About The Role
A well-established pre-primary school in Durbanville is looking for energetic, enthusiastic and caring
Aftercare Assistants to join its team.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who genuinely enjoys working with young children and is looking to gain experience within a pre-primary or childcare environment. The position could be particularly well suited to a student or entry-level candidate interested in education, early childhood development or childcare.
The successful candidates will assist with the supervision and care of young children during the school's afternoon aftercare programme, helping to create a happy, safe and engaging environment.
As this is a shift-based position, candidates must have sufficient flexibility to work scheduled shifts between
11:00 and 18:00.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the supervision of pre-primary-aged children during aftercare hours.
- Ensure children are safe, comfortable and appropriately supervised at all times.
- Engage children in age-appropriate games, activities and creative play.
- Assist with indoor and outdoor activities.
- Help maintain a positive, fun and nurturing aftercare environment.
- Assist children with basic day-to-day needs where required.
- Help with snacks, mealtimes and general aftercare routines.
- Encourage positive behaviour, sharing and interaction between children.
- Assist with keeping play and activity areas clean, organised and safe.
- Support the teaching and aftercare team with general duties.
- Communicate appropriately and professionally with colleagues, children and parents when required.
- Follow the school's policies, routines and child-safety procedures.
Minimum Requirements
- Fluent/bilingual in both English and Afrikaans – essential.
- Must be available to work shifts between 11:00 and 18:00.
- Must be comfortable and confident working with young children.
- Reliable and able to commit to scheduled shifts.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Responsible, trustworthy and punctual.
- Able to work effectively as part of a team.
- Must be based within reasonable travelling distance of Durbanville.
Advantageous Experience
Previous formal experience is not necessarily required; however, exposure to any of the following would be advantageous:
- Aftercare or childcare
- Babysitting
- Au pairing
- Pre-primary or crèche environments
- Tutoring young children
- Holiday programmes
- Children's camps
- Coaching or children's activities
- Sunday school or similar children's programmes
Candidates studying towards Education, Early Childhood Development (ECD), Psychology, Occupational Therapy or another child-focused qualification are encouraged to apply, provided their study timetable allows them to meet the required shift schedule.
