Electrical Technical Manager
Durban based position
Reports to: Director of Strategy and Communications, with a dotted line to National Sales Manager
Purpose: This position requires you and your team to provide technical design, specification and proposal support for Electrical opportunities in the Industrial and Commercial markets, and to lead Magnet's Electrical Services technicians in delivering site testing, inspections, fault-finding and service work. You also carry national responsibility for Electrical design methodology, specification and preferred product and supplier standards, ensuring consistent technical delivery across all branches. Working closely with Sales and Procurement, you ensure designs and proposals are accurate, competitive and reflect the customer's regulatory, technical and budgetary requirements, maximising value and driving conversion, while larger installation work remains the responsibility of the customer's appointed contractor or our chosen OEM.
Responsibilities and duties
· Develop Electrical opportunities with Clients through Sales reps
o Deliver the annual Electrical turnover and margin targets
o Identify opportunities in key Electrical focus areas of LV switchgear, Motor control, Power quality assessments, Power Factor correction, Surge protection & earthing, Electrical Distribution boards, Power Management, Acoustic and thermal imaging audits and back-up power (UPS & generators).
o Work with sales to identify, scope and support conversion of electrical opportunities across Industrial and Commercial markets.
o Act quickly to develop designs, specifications and proposals to increase the likelihood of winning the enquiry, with proposal turnaround in line with agreed timing.
o Maintain an agreed schedule of joint customer engagement: joint site visits with sales representatives and attendance at customer roadshows
· Develop designs and specifications that maximise benefit and value for the Client
o Engineer designs and specifications to minimise cost and maximise the benefit required, within Magnet’s preferred product strategy across core electrical brands (e.g. Schneider, Eaton, Siemens, Tele).
o Work with Procurement and suppliers/OEMs to secure best pricing, lead times and product availability.
o Tailor designs and specifications to client needs and constraints.
· Manage the Electrical technical and field service team effectively
o Provide a clear brief and scope for each proposal and service job.
o Manage workload and deliverables, help team to prioritise activities, check BOQs and costings
o Manage risk and exposure, ensure team designs to relevant standards
o Review all designs and proposals, and sign off.
o Manage day to day running of the team, ensuring there is clear communication and accountability
o Oversee time and job allocation of the Electrical Services technicians and ensure correct costing and charge-out and ensure proper records are kept of all tools and equipment utilised for services
o Lead the Electrical Services technicians to safely deliver site testing, inspections, fault-finding and service work, and to proactively identify further service and specification opportunities from site work.
o Mentor and coach team members, developing the reasoning behind design and site decisions, not just reviewing the output.
· Ensure designs and specifications are practical, compliant and executable by contractors
o Ensure contractor installation expectations are clearly defined during handover, with drawings, BOQs, specifications and product assumptions complete before submission.
o Oversee design integrity through to site execution, reviewing design changes, site deviations and variation requirements on strategic jobs.
o Provide technical support on site and design issues, and attend site when required to clarify design and support installation.
o Project manage small electrical projects and service works as required, ensuring they are delivered on time and within the budgeted BOQ.
o Manage after-sales and warranty resolution through to close-out, capturing lessons learned for future improvement.
· Provide national technical governance for Electrical
o Standardise Electrical design methodologies, specifications and approved product ranges nationally, across all branches.
o Implement technical governance through design reviews, specification control and compliance checks.
o Align Sales, Procurement and Technical teams nationally around approved Electrical products and supplier frameworks.
o Maintain preferred supplier, OEM, contractor, panel builder and installer relationships for Electrical nationally.
o Own a structured product training plan for core Electrical brands (e.g. Schneider, Eaton, Siemens, Tele), so technical and sales teams nationally can confidently advise on the right product for the application.
o Provide technical support to ensure consistent Electrical design quality and implementation across all branches, not only the home branch.

o Deliver department objectives by proactively managing staff; planning and evaluating department activities
o Maintain staff by recruiting, selecting, on-boarding, and training employees
o Accomplish staff results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job outcomes/deliverables

This role is Magnet’s senior technical voice for the Electrical division nationally, and is expected to assist the Director of Strategy and Communications on technical matters when required.
