Karan Beef Farming (Pty) Ltd is looking for experienced Cattleman at our Albert Falls Feedlot with a minimum of 4 years’ experience working at a cattle feedlot. The successful candidate must have extensive cattle experience, a self-starter, and have a passion to work with cattle.

Identify, monitor, and treat sick cattle

  • Conduct daily inspections of cattle to identify signs of illness, injury, stress, or abnormal behaviour.
  • Administer treatments and medications according to veterinary protocols.
  • Monitor recovery progress and maintain accurate health records to ensure animal welfare and minimise losses.

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) awareness and biosecurity management

  • Maintain a thorough understanding of Foot and Mouth Disease symptoms, transmission methods, and prevention measures.
  • Adhere to strict biosecurity protocols to reduce disease risks.
  • Report suspected cases immediately and assist with containment and control measures in accordance with regulatory requirements.

Management of cow and calf herds

  • Oversee the daily care, health, and welfare of breeding cows and calves.
  • Monitor calving activities, calf development, and herd condition.
  • Ensure animals receive appropriate nutrition, healthcare, and husbandry practices to optimise productivity.

Processing of incoming cattle

  • Receive and inspect newly arrived cattle.
  • Facilitate weighing, identification, tagging, health assessments, vaccination programmes, and record capturing.
  • Ensure all cattle meet feedlot entry requirements and are processed efficiently.

Offloading and dispatching of cattle

  • Supervise the safe loading and unloading of cattle to minimise stress and injury.
  • Verify stock numbers, documentation, identification, and transport requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with animal welfare and transport regulations.

Vaccination and re-vaccination programmes

  • Administer vaccination and booster programmes according to feedlot health protocols.
  • Maintain accurate vaccination records and monitor cattle for post-vaccination reactions.
  • Work closely with veterinarians and management to ensure herd immunity standards are maintained.

Allocation of cattle to designated pens

  • Sort and place cattle into the appropriate pens based on weight, health status, age, gender, and feeding requirements.
  • Maintain optimal stocking densities and group management to improve animal performance and welfare.

Management of grazing camps and pasture resources

  • Monitor grazing conditions and pasture utilisation.
  • Implement rotational grazing practices where applicable to maximise pasture productivity.
  • Identify and address issues relating to fencing, water availability, and grazing pressure.

Conduct post-mortem examinations

  • Perform post-mortem inspections on deceased animals to assist in determining causes of death.
  • Collect relevant samples and information when required for veterinary investigation.
  • Compile reports and recommendations to help prevent recurring health issues within the herd.

Daily livestock data capturing and reporting

  • Capture and maintain accurate records of cattle movements, treatments, mortalities, feed consumption, vaccinations, and performance data.
  • Generate reports to support operational decision-making and compliance requirements.

Medicine inventory management and record keeping

  • Order, receive, issue, and control veterinary medicines and animal health products.
  • Maintain stock control systems and ensure adequate inventory levels.
  • Ensure all medicines are stored, used, and recorded in accordance with legal and company requirements.

Feed bunk management

  • Monitor feed bunks to ensure proper feed allocation and consumption.
  • Assess cattle feeding behaviour and identify issues affecting feed intake.
  • Work closely with feedlot management to optimise feed efficiency, growth performance, and minimise wastage.

Water resource monitoring

  • Conduct routine inspections of dams, reservoirs, and water infrastructure.
  • Monitor water levels and quality to ensure an uninterrupted supply of clean drinking water for livestock.
  • Report and coordinate repairs of water-related infrastructure when required.

Administration of incoming cattle documentation

  • Verify and process all documentation associated with incoming cattle, including permits, health certificates, transport documents, and ownership records.
  • Ensure compliance with traceability and regulatory requirements.

Daily planning and movement of cattle

  • Coordinate the movement of cattle between receiving areas, processing facilities, grazing camps, hospital pens, and feeding pens.
  • Plan daily operational activities to ensure efficient utilisation of labour, facilities, and resources.

People management and HR administration

  • Supervise and lead cattle and feedlot staff to ensure operational efficiency and adherence to company standards.
  • Manage employee attendance, timesheets, leave requests, and workforce scheduling.
  • Conduct performance management, disciplinary processes, coaching, and training to maintain a productive and compliant workforce.
  • Promote a strong health, safety, and animal welfare culture across the operation.

Requirements

  • Matric (Grade 12)
  • Animal health qualification would be advantageous.
  • Conversant in both English and Afrikaans
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Excellent people skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Computer Literate
  • Basic knowledge of Excel
  • Strong numeracy skills and attention to detail is paramount.
  • Must be prepared to work under pressure.
  • Must be able to work weekends, night shift, overtime and on public holidays.
