We are looking for a Commis Chef who will work under the supervision of the Sous Chef and Demi Chef de Partie and help in preparing and serving dishes to meet required standards. The commis chef must familiarize themselves with the menu, adapting to changes to meet guest preferences & ensure timely and fresh mise en place. This role will support various shifts and kitchen areas as needed and perform other duties as assigned by the department head.

Key Accountabilities

  • Accurately measure, peel, chop, and mix ingredients to prepare for service.
  • Assist in cooking and plating dishes following recipes and presentation standards.
  • Maintain a clean, organized workstation while adhering to food safety regulations.
  • Rotate stock using FIFO to ensure freshness and minimize waste.
  • Receive, inspect, and store deliveries properly, verifying accuracy.
  • Follow health and safety regulations for food handling, storage, and cooking.
  • Communicate effectively with senior chefs and kitchen staff to ensure smooth service.

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric (NQF Level 4) and a Culinary or recognised qualification from a South African or International Educational Institution (NQF Level 5) advantageous
  • Chef apprenticeship
  • Flexible and able to work shifts
  • Ability to use kitchen technology
  • At least 1-2 years’ experience in a similar role in a busy, up-market establishment.
  • Satisfactory criminal record, subject to assessment of the nature, severity, relevance, and recency of any offence
